ROLE SUMMARY
We are seeking a Senior Director of Engineering to lead our engineering team and drive technology strategy and execution across our app, web platform, and supporting systems. As Head of Engineering, this person will translate business requirements into scalable technology solutions, drive efficiencies through data analysis and AI, automate complex logistical processes, and build systems that power our business operations and aggressive expansion plans.


This role requires a technical leader who thrives at the intersection of business, user experience, and engineering, ensuring our technology drives growth and operational excellence.

Volo is looking for someone who can execute in the following areas:
  • Technology Leadership 
    • Lead and grow the engineering team to deliver high-quality software and infrastructure aligned with business priorities.
    • Drive architecture and development across the tech stack, including ReactJS, GraphQL, Postgres, Kubernetes, Android & iOS apps, Stripe, Braze, Amplitude, Google Suite integrations.
    • Own and evolve technical roadmaps for web, mobile, and backend systems.
    • Implement best practices in software development, automated testing, deployment, and maintenance.
    • Lead innovation through existing AI experience and application, including by identifying ways to integrate advancements into both engineering process and design
  • Innovate and Execute the Product Roadmap
    • Translate business requirements into actionable technical developments
    • Build and optimize data-backed logistical systems, accounting for nuanced sports-specific requirements.
    • Ensure our technology enhances the experience for both internal customers (employees, league managers) and external customers (players, captains, corporate clients).
    • Work closely with Customer Experience, Customer Lifecycle, and Operations teams to refine features and workflows that improve user experience.
  • Technical Operations
    • Ensure high availability, scalability, and security across all platforms.
    • Evaluate and implement tools to automate and improve workflows for staff and customers.
    • Manage technical vendor relationships as needed.
  • Team Development
    • Hire, mentor, and retain top engineering and product talent, fostering a culture of accountability, learning, and excellence.
    • Establish clear goals, KPIs, and processes for the engineering team to drive consistent, predictable delivery.

Your expected skill set & experience:
MUST-HAVES

  • 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience, with at least 2-5+ years managing teams of 5-10+ engineersProven success leading and scaling engineering teams in high-growth or consumer-facing tech environments.
  • Prior senior/staff engineer background; hands-on technical credibility.
  • Hands-on technical expertise with modern web and mobile stacks, ideally including: ReactJS, GraphQL, Postgres, Kubernetes, and native iOS/Android apps.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute technical roadmaps that balance innovation, scalability, and business priorities.
  • Strong background in building and optimizing complex logistical or operational systems that power large-scale user experiences.
  • Deep knowledge of software development best practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, cloud infrastructure, and security.
  • Experience applying AI and machine learning to improve product features or engineering processes.
  • AI-native experience and knowledge of cost-effective models (off/near-shore).
  • Track record of collaborating cross-functionally with Product, Customer Experience, and Operations teams to translate business requirements into technical execution.
  • Experience in fast-paced (startup) environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to scale systems and teams efficiently.
  • Comfortable with lean product/design/engineering pods.
  • Demonstrated ability to scale systems and teams efficiently.
  • Excellent communication and executive presence, with the ability to operate effectively at both the strategic and technical levels.
