Role Overview
The Soccer Commissioner is responsible for delivering an outstanding player experience and ensuring smooth, efficient league operations during assigned shifts. Soccer Commissioners combine strong operational leadership with deep sport knowledge to keep matches fair, organized, and fun across all skill levels. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about soccer and have experience playing, refereeing, or leading league play.
Rate: $25/hour when assigned as Commissioner
Core Responsibilities
Facility Oversight & Shift Leadership
Own the shift. Set the standard. Be reliable.
- Overall Facility Supervision: Oversee the facility during assigned shifts, ensuring a safe, organized, and welcoming environment.
- Staff Placement & Monitoring: Ensure all staff are in assigned positions for the full shift; provide real-time coaching, redirection, or support as needed.
- Shift Operations: Maintain match flow and court schedules while calmly adapting to delays, injuries, or player issues.
- End-of-Shift Ownership: Confirm all equipment is stored properly and the facility is secured before departure.
- On-Site Support: Step in to referee, host, or explain formats as needed to protect the player experience.
Player & Staff Experience
Lead with care, fairness, and community.
- Player Issue Resolution: Address player concerns, disputes, or questions professionally and empathetically, prioritizing safety, respect, and fun.
- Score Management: Ensure all match scores are accurately collected and entered before the end of the night.
- Injury Reporting: Complete and submit all required injury reports accurately and on time.
- Staff Training & Mentorship: Train and support new or potential staff on volleyball operations, officiating basics, and Volo culture. Assist in creation of part time training materials.
- Staff Communication: Provide detailed shift reports to the Staffing Manager regarding performance, issues, and follow-ups.
Soccer-Specific Knowledge & On-Court Leadership
Know the game. Enforce it confidently.
Commissioners are expected to demonstrate strong working knowledge of recreational soccer rules and gameplay, including:
- Clear understanding of common league rules, including but not limited to:
- Layout of a soccer field
- Standard violations (handballs)
- Goalie rules (as defined by league rules)
- Fouls (as defined by league rules)
- Gender requirements for coed leagues
- Ability to referee matches and make consistent, confident judgment calls for indoor and outdoor games
- Ability to clearly explain rules and calls to players of varying experience levels.
- Comfort managing common gameplay issues such as:
- Illegal substitutions
- Gender requirement issues
- Disputes over calls or interpretations
- Support inclusive play by balancing competition with sportsmanship and social league expectations.
Operations, Communication & Accountability
Communicate clearly. Follow through.
- Equipment Management: Identify equipment shortages or maintenance issues and communicate them clearly to the Logistics Manager via shift reports.
- Kids Week Execution: Ensure Kids Week volleyball programming is executed as communicated by the Full-Time Staff Team.
- Communication: Maintain proactive, respectful communication with players, staff, and Full Time Staff throughout the shift.
- Reporting: Generate accurate, thorough shift reports covering incidents, equipment needs, player feedback, and staff performance.
- Policy & Rule Enforcement: Enforce facility rules and code of conduct consistently to ensure a safe and respectful environment.
- Program Evaluation: Audit programs, staff and/or players to ensure Volo brand standards are being upheld.
- On Site Selling: Support player acquisition/retention by communicating registration dates, deadlines and promotions.
Tournament & Special Event Operations
Stay flexible. Solve problems in real time.
When assigned, Soccer Commissioners must be able to confidently manage tournaments and events, including:
- Making schedule pivots to address delays, court availability, or weather
- Keeping teams informed and engaged throughout transitions
