Role Overview
The Pickleball Commissioner is responsible for delivering an exceptional player experience and maintaining smooth, efficient league operations during assigned shifts. Pickleball Commissioners lead confidently on and off the court. They combine strong operational execution with deep sport knowledge, ensuring games run fairly, safely, and enjoyably for players of all skill levels. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about pickleball and have direct playing or officiating experience.
Rate: $25/hour when assigned as Commissioner
Core Responsibilities
Facility Oversight & Shift Leadership
Own the shift. Be reliable. Set the tone.
- Overall Facility Supervision: Oversee the facility during assigned shifts, maintaining a safe, organized, and welcoming environment.
- Staff Placement & Monitoring: Ensure all staff are in assigned positions for the full shift; provide real-time coaching, redirection, or support as needed.
- Shift Operations: Keep courts running on schedule while calmly adapting to delays, player flow issues, or last-minute changes.
- End-of-Shift Ownership: Confirm equipment is stored properly and the facility is secured before departure.
- On-Site Hosting: Step in to host, explain formats, or support gameplay as needed to protect the player experience.
Player & Staff Experience
Lead with care, fairness, and community.
- Player Issue Resolution: Address player questions, disputes, or concerns professionally and empathetically, prioritizing fun, fairness, and safety.
- Score Management: Ensure all match scores are accurately collected and entered before the end of the night.
- Injury Reporting: Complete and submit all required injury reports accurately and on time.
- Staff Training & Mentorship: Train and support new or potential staff on pickleball operations, customer service expectations, and Volo culture. Assist in creation of part time training materials.
- Staff Communication: Submit detailed shift reports to the Staffing Manager highlighting performance, issues, and follow-ups.
Pickleball-Specific Knowledge & On-Court Leadership
Know the game. Enforce it confidently.
Commissioners are expected to demonstrate strong working knowledge of pickleball rules, formats, and flow, including:
- Clear understanding of USA Pickleball rules, including but not limited to:
- Kitchen / non-volley zone violations
- Serving rules and faults
- Double-bounce rule
- Foot faults and line calls
- Clear understanding and ability to explain and manage common open play formats (paddle stack, run-it-back, challenge courts, rotating courts, and time-based rotations)
- Setting clear expectations for court rotation, wait times, and player flow
- Balancing competition and inclusivity by helping group players appropriately by skill level when possible
- Keeping games moving and preventing bottlenecks or confusion during peak times
- Addressing player questions or disagreements calmly and consistently
- Making real-time adjustments to formats as needed to maintain a positive, fun experience
- Ability to explain rules calmly and clearly to new or frustrated players.
- Comfort making real-time judgment calls and enforcing rules consistently—even when players disagree.
- Ability to identify and resolve common gameplay issues such as:
- Court rotation confusion
- Skill-level mismatches
- Pace-of-play slowdowns
- Support inclusive play by helping balance competition while keeping games fun and social.
Operations, Communication & Accountability
Communicate clearly. Follow through.
- Equipment Management: Identify equipment shortages or maintenance issues and communicate them clearly to the Logistics Manager via shift reports.
- Kids Week Execution: Ensure Kids Week pickleball programming is executed as communicated by the Full-Time Staff Team.
- Communication: Maintain proactive, respectful communication with players, staff, and management throughout the shift.
- Reporting: Generate accurate, thorough shift reports covering incidents, equipment needs, player feedback, and staff performance.
- Policy & Rule Enforcement: Enforce facility rules and code of conduct consistently to ensure a safe, respectful environment.
- Program Evaluation: Audit programs, staff and/or players to ensure Volo brand standards are being upheld.
- On Site Selling: Support player acquisition/retention by communicating registration dates, deadlines and promotions.
Tournament & Special Event Operations
Stay flexible. Solve problems in real time.
When assigned, Pickleball Commissioners must be able to confidently manage tournaments and events, including:
- Creating teams for scrambles or hat draws
- Building playoff brackets after pool play
- Making schedule pivots to address delays, court availability, or weather
- Keeping players informed and engaged throughout event transitions
