Estimated Hours: 15 - 20 hours per week (includes 6-10 hours dedicated to on-field work on nights and weekends and 9-10 hrs of in-office work)

Role Overview
The Daily Play Commissioner is responsible for delivering an outstanding player experience and ensuring smooth, efficient daily program operations during assigned shifts. This role lives out Volo’s Core Values: Play First, Lead with Care, Own It, Be Reliable, and Build Community; while serving as the on-site leader for players and other part-time staff.
Daily Commissioners combine strong interpersonal leadership with deep sport knowledge to keep pickups organized, structured, and fun across all sports. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about bringing people together and building community.
Core Responsibilities
The core responsibilities of the Daily Play Commissioner include, but are not limited to, the following:
Facility Oversight & Shift Leadership
Own the shift. Set the standard. Be reliable.
- Overall Pickup Supervision: Oversee the pickup during assigned shifts, ensuring a safe, organized, and welcoming environment.
- Product Quality: Ensure all brand standards are met including but not limited to formats, welcome speeches, player engagement, and player safety.
- Shift Operations: Maintain pickup flow and court schedules while calmly adapting to delays, injuries, or player issues.
- Training: Train future hosts to run quality pickups at the brand standard
- Product Knowledge: Have a strong understanding of the Volo Pass product including pickup offerings - sports, venues, locations, days - and upcoming events and tournaments.
- Active Conversion: Identify non-member players or drop-ins and proactively explain the value of Volo Pass to increase membership.
- Member Retention: Engage with current Volo Pass members to strengthen their connection to the community.
Player & Staff Experience
Lead with care, fairness, and community.
- Player Issue Resolution: Address player concerns, disputes, or questions professionally and empathetically, prioritizing safety, respect, and fun.
- Staff Training & Mentorship: Train and support new or potential staff on Volo Pass operations, Volo culture. Assist in updating and presenting part time training materials.
- Staff Communication: Provide detailed shift logs to the Staffing Manager regarding performance, issues, and follow-ups.
- Daily Play Improvements: Provide valuable insight to VP leadership of what is and isn’t working and provide suggestions on how to continually adapt and improve the daily play product.
Sport-Specific Knowledge & On-Court Leadership

Commissioners are expected to demonstrate strong working knowledge of recreational rules and gameplay for basketball, pickleball, soccer, and volleyball, including:
- Clear understanding of common pickup formats/ rules, including but not limited to:
- Layout of a court/field
- Standard violations and fouls
- Pickup rules (as defined by pickup one sheeter or tournament rules)
- Ability to maintain safe play
- Ability to pivot quickly to ensure the best playing format with the number of active participants
- Ability to clearly explain format to players of varying experience levels.
- Support inclusive play by balancing competition with sportsmanship and social sports expectations.
Operations, Communication & Accountability

- Equipment Management: Identify equipment shortages or maintenance issues and communicate them clearly to the Logistics Director via shift log.
- Communication: Maintain proactive, respectful communication with players, staff, and Full Time Staff throughout the shift.
- Reporting: Generate accurate, thorough shift reports covering incidents, equipment needs, player feedback, and staff performance.
- Policy & Rule Enforcement: Enforce facility rules and code of conduct consistently to ensure a safe and respectful environment.
- Program Evaluation: Audit programs, staff and/or players to ensure Volo brand standards are being upheld.
- On Site Selling: Support player acquisition/retention by promoting relevant daily programs and membership promotion.
- Tournament & Special Event Operations: Supporting tournament/event prep and day of operations
Admin Support

- Lead Calls: Support membership sales through and tournament sales through ‘hot lead’ outreach plus check-in on expected roster sizes for upcoming tournaments
- Program Build: Support the local team operations by building daily programs including pickups, tournaments, events and fitness classes
- Member Onboarding: Integrate personal outreach into our member onboarding process to promote program participation and prolonged retention
- Player Communications: Support in sending welcome emails for daily programs
- Volo Pass Survey: Get 5% of Volo Pass members to fill out quarterly survey
Stay flexible. Solve problems in real time.
When assigned, Daily Play Commissioners must be able to confidently manage tournaments and events, including:
- Clearly communicate scheduling, format, rules, and tiebreakers of the tournament.
- Making schedule pivots to address delays, court availability, or weather
- Keeping teams informed and engaged throughout transitions
- Ensure all match scores are accurately collected and entered before the end of the round.
- Properly apply tiebreaker scenarios for advancement to the knock out stages
What Success Looks Like
- A successful Commissioner is trusted in fostering and growing the Volo Pass community. Including but not limited to growing specific venues in pickup participation, growing specific formats, increasing Volo Pass member participation at events.
- Getting enough participation for two premiere tournaments per sport per year
- Strengthen Volo Pass retention numbers
- Increase pickup game ratings survey scores
- Achieve a 30 NPS on the quarterly Volo Pass Survey
Qualifications
- Minimum of 1-3 years of professional experience with an emphasis on training and staff development
- Ability to work nights and weekends. This will not fall into a general work-week and hours will typically fall Sunday-Thursday between 12:00 p.m. – 10:00.p.m.)
- Can marshal resources effectively and comfortably
- Can navigate a fast-paced, ever-changing environment with minimal supervision
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Dynamic personality interested in working in, and contributing to, a fun and active sporting environment
