SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Materials Planning and Purchasing Manager is responsible for overseeing the end-to-end process of materials planning, procurement, inventory control, and distribution to ensure efficient and cost-effective supply chain operations. This role plays a critical part in meeting production schedules, managing supplier relationships, minimizing costs, and optimizing inventory levels. The manager also leads a cross-functional team, develops strategic initiatives, and collaborates with departments such as production, engineering, and quality assurance to align material needs with business goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties as assigned)

  • Develop and implement effective strategies for materials planning, forecasting, and production scheduling.
  • Oversee inventory control, purchasing, shipping/receiving, and storeroom operations.
  • Negotiate and manage supplier relationships to ensure timely, cost-effective procurement of quality goods and services.
  • Implement and maintain inventory control systems, optimizing stock levels and turnover to reduce waste and stockouts.
  • Identify and execute cost-saving initiatives within the materials supply chain.
  • Lead and develop a team of purchasing and inventory professionals, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to align materials planning with organizational goals.
  • Leverage MRP/ERP systems (preferably SAP/S4 HANA) for efficient planning and execution.
  • Monitor supplier performance and ensure compliance with company policies.
  • Use key performance metrics and data to improve supply chain processes and forecast future needs.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; certifications in inventory/resource planning a plus.
  • 10–15 years’ experience in materials management, inventory control, and procurement.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of MRP/ERP systems.
  • Strong knowledge of materials management, warehouse operations, and supplier management.
  • Proven ability to monitor the work performance and vendor communication that Buyer/Planners have with all vendors to ensure appropriate materials inventory position.

SKILLS

  • Proven experience in materials management, supply chain management, or related fields, including leadership experience. 
  • Experience managing a team of 3-10 materials and/or inventory direct report and set expectations for critical points of execution.
  • Strong understanding of MRP (Materials Requirement Planning), ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems, and inventory management principles. 
  • Strong communication, organization, negotiations, and analytical skills
  • Cross-functional communications abilities
  • Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions. 
  • Ability to identify and resolve complex issues related to materials planning and procurement. 
  • Experience in cost analysis, forecasting, and cross-functional collaboration
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive continuous improvement
