Overview of the United Soccer League (USL)
The United Soccer League (USL) is the heartbeat of American soccer. Impacting more than 200 communities across the United States, the USL is the first and only soccer organization in the United States to build a youth-to-professional pathway for both men and women within one ecosystem. That structure includes three professional leagues: Gainbridge Super League (women), USL Championship (men), and USL League One (men); two pre-professional leagues: USL League Two (men) and the USL W League (women); and two youth platforms: USL Academy and USL Youth.

Position Purpose
The Technical Director – Women’s Pathway will play a vital role in identifying opportunities to advance the women’s game whilst providing strategic guidance to the USL leadership team, with the ultimate goal of ensuring viable women’s soccer opportunities within USL for the top players. This position will oversee the complete technical pathway for women and girls across Gainbridge Super League, USL W League, and USL Academy. The Technical Director – Women’s Pathway will also consult USL women’s clubs on technical functions and hiring coaches/technical staff. The ideal candidate must understand the women’s soccer landscape and be able to build and maintain key relationships within that landscape.

Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Consult with Gainbridge Super League and USL W League Clubs on staffing and hiring needs across women’s technical functions like technical directors, coaches, etc.
  • Collaborate with the USL leadership team on the development of the Gainbridge Super League, USL W League, and USL Academy, and overall women’s soccer pathway. 
  • Advise USL leadership team and owners of opportunities, advancements, issues, and changes in the women’s soccer calendar, laws of the game, competition design, and/or sporting mandates that may impact the USL business.
  • Build and maintain relationships with coaches and players at relevant NCAA institutions and other domestic and foreign leagues and federations, to recruit and retain top women’s soccer talent.
  • Lead player, coach, and referee initiatives, introducing innovative and unique programming that supports the advancement of women in soccer.   
  • Serve on relevant committees and represent USL as appropriate with external organizations. 
  • Spearhead discovery process and strategic planning of new competitions that create more meaningful games, generate new sources of revenue, and bring more visibility to the women’s game.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned. 

Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience/participation within collegiate and/or professional women’s soccer, including playing and coaching. 
  • Professional playing and coaching experience a plus.
  • Minimum U.S. Soccer B coaching license required; A/Pro highly preferred. 
  • Knowledge of the global women’s professional soccer landscape required. 
  • Strong relationships across the women’s soccer industry. 
  • Experience with player contracts and transfer experience is a plus. 
  • Bilingual: English & Spanish proficiency a plus but not required. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with team members, executives, member clubs, and external partners.
  • Ability to work independently in a multi-faceted, fast, fluid, and deadline-driven environment.
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic a must.
  • Ability to work as business needs require which may include long days, evenings, weekends, occasional holidays, and travel if / when necessary.  
  • Must have U.S. work authorization. 
 
Work Environment
Based in Tampa, FL, USL Headquarters provides a vibrant and open working environment designed to promote collaboration, the exchange of ideas, and knowledge sharing. We believe in fostering a culture that encourages creativity, communication, and teamwork. 

 Currently, USL HQ operates on a hybrid work model. From Monday to Thursday, team members gather in person to harness the power of face-to-face collaboration. This not only strengthens the bonds within the team but also enhances communication and innovation. On Fridays, we transition to a remote work setup, providing our team with the flexibility to manage their tasks in an environment of their choosing.

 Typical USL HQ hours are Monday – Friday 8:30am – 5:30pm ET. Evenings, weekends, occasional holidays, and travel may be necessary based on business demands.
