Position Overview

The Director of Coaching/USL2 Head Coach is responsible for organizing, implementing, and overseeing all competitive soccer programs for Alabama FC South, the competitive arm of the YMCA of Greater Montgomery.

This dual role includes strategic planning for player recruitment and retention, team formation, game scheduling, coach development, and community engagement. Additionally, as Head Coach of Montgomery United FC (USL League Two), the position requires transformational leadership to guide all aspects of the men’s pre-professional team, including player recruitment, training, match preparation, and community representation.

This is a high-commitment role that involves extended hours on the field, travel for games, and direct community interaction, requiring a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a professional, positive presence at all times.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Alabama FC South – Youth Club

  • Organize and implement all competitive club programs (tryouts, recruiting, roster formation, game scheduling, referee assignments, coach training, and program operations).
  • Develop partnerships with local schools, churches, and community organizations.
  • Plan and lead summer and winter camps/clinics.
  • Oversee player development through a structured club curriculum.
  • Attend and evaluate AFC South matches for program effectiveness.
  • Conduct outreach clinics to promote competitive programs.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise paid professional coaches.
  • Develop marketing materials in collaboration with the marketing department.
  • Conduct end-of-season surveys for program evaluation.
  • Prepare and manage the annual AFC South budget within YMCA guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with YMCA policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Communicate promptly and effectively with staff, volunteers, parents, and participants.
  • Assist the Vice President with major YMCA-hosted events and tournaments.
  • Support team recruitment for YMCA and AFC South-hosted tournaments.
  • Assist the Vice President with YMCA Annual Campaign as needed.

Montgomery United FC – USL League Two

  • Serve as Head Coach of Montgomery United FC (USL2).
  • Recruit, develop, and lead a team with the goal of excelling in USL League Two.
  • Plan and deliver training and fitness programs; lead all team training sessions.
  • Coach all home, away, and exhibition matches.
  • Collaborate with the General Manager/Sporting Director on player recruitment and community relations.
  • Conduct a minimum of 3 weekly training sessions during the season.
  • Support scheduling of player appearances and media opportunities.
  • Represent Montgomery United FC and YMCA of Greater Montgomery with professionalism at all times.
  • During the season conduct one meeting a week with all professional staff to review the prior week and upcoming week.
  • Participate in coaching clinics, media interviews, and community events as requested.
  • Recruit, retain, and develop assistant coaches.
  • Coordinate travel and home match logistics with coaching staff.
  • Manage and organize player tryouts.
  • Plan and deliver a minimum of 3 youth development camps each summer.
  • Organize team player involvement in youth camps and clinics.
  • Ensure clear communication of operational details to players with support from the General Manager/Sporting Director.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • USSF “C” License or UEFA equivalent (required).
  • USSF “B” License or UEFA equivalent (preferred).
  • Prior head coaching experience at the college or USL2 level (preferred).
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.
  • CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogen certifications (required within 30 days of employment).
