Position Description
U.S. Soccer is seeking a creative, passionate, and organized content professional to lead editorial coverage of the Open Cup, the nation’s longest-running soccer competition. The Open Cup Writer and Producer will serve as the primary editorial lead for all Open Cup storytelling, overseeing and producing written coverage across U.S. Soccer’s digital platforms and coordinating closely with internal stakeholders to shape and elevate the tournament’s narrative.
This role will work cross-functionally with the Social Media, Video, Content Strategy & Planning, Marketing, Corporate Communications and other teams to ensure cohesive and impactful storytelling across both internal and external platforms. The right candidate will be a skilled writer with a sharp editorial sense, strong organizational skills, creative storytelling approach and the ability to thrive in fast-paced, event-based environments.
This position will require travel to Open Cup games, as well as availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays, in alignment with the tournament schedule.
Primary Responsibilities
- Serve as lead writer and content producer for all Open Cup editorial coverage on U.S. Soccer’s website and app.
- Lead the development of the Open Cup content plan in collaboration with the Content Strategy & Planning team, ensuring alignment with Federation priorities and audience engagement goals.
- Create a wide range of written content including engaging articles, match previews, team features, news updates, and more.
- Ensure content maintains a high level of accuracy, quality, and engagement, even when working within tight time constraints.
- Shape the editorial narrative of the tournament, identify compelling storylines that celebrate the depth and diversity of the U.S. Soccer landscape.
- Collaborate with internal departments (Comms, Media, Social, Video, Marketing, etc.) to align messaging, amplify stories and drive engagement.
- Coordinate with the Digital Editor to maintain a consistent voice, tone and quality across all Open Cup content.
- Travel to Open Cup games to capture content, conduct interviews and produce timely on-the-ground storytelling as needed.
- Curate content across Open Cup landing pages, U.S. Soccer’s home page and updating related digital touch points.
- Maintain in-depth knowledge of Open Cup teams, history and evolving narratives throughout the tournament.
- Monitor content performance and collaborate with the Content Strategy team to refine tactics and improve outcomes.
- Support additional written content needs across the Federation as requested.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in sports journalism, editorial production, or digital content creation.
- Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, and storytelling, particularly in deadline-driven environments.
- Experience working across digital platforms with a strong understanding of web publishing tools and CMS.
- Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally, especially in live event settings.
- Flexibility to travel and work evenings, weekends, and holidays aligned to the Open Cup schedule.
- Deep understanding of the U.S. Soccer landscape, especially the cultural significance of the Open Cup.
- Highly organized with the ability to juggle multiple deliverables across different timelines.
- Proven ability to meet tight deadlines while maintaining quality and efficiency across multiple projects.
- Strong understanding of SEO best practices and ability to stay on top of SEO trends and algorithm changes.
- Used to performing and excelling in fast-paced environments and meeting tight deadlines.
- Discretion, this role will be privy to confidential information.

- Spanish language proficiency strongly preferred.
