Position Description 

The Assistant Press Officer (APO) supports the Men’s National Team (MNT) Communications Department by assisting with media relations, public relations, and content production activities. This role plays a key part in managing media operations, producing key materials for matches and events, and supporting storytelling efforts across multiple platforms. The APO will work closely with the Director of Communications and other departments to promote the team, facilitate interviews, and contribute to the broader organizational goals of U.S. Soccer.

This is a full-time role requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week, with significant weekend work and extensive travel, both domestically and internationally.

 Primary Responsibilities
  • Produce Game Notes and Lineup Notes for media, TV, and digital platforms for every match.
  • Assist with all aspects of Match and Roster Announcements in coordination with the Director of Communications/Press Officer.
  • Maintain and update statistical tracking documents, milestones, and records for the USMNT, sharing updates with relevant departments.
  • Edit all USMNT communications materials, ensuring accuracy and clarity.
  • Support in organizing and scheduling media interviews for players, coaches, and staff both during and outside training camps and matches.
  • Coordinate media activities including MD-1 mixed zones, pre-training media scrums, and game day interviews (pre- and post-match).
  • Contribute to the production and editing of Match Reports and Game Stories.
  • Organize player headshots when needed and assist with visual media production.
  • Coordinate dissemination of media schedules and opportunities in each game market.
  • Liaise with content and video teams to schedule and deliver content across platforms.
  • Assist in the preparation of presentation slides for internal camp meetings.
  • Support organization of visits from VIPs, athletes, and former players during training and matches.
  • Help coordinate large-scale content shoots, including new uniform launches and pre-tournament media days.
  • Assist in organizing World Cup Media Day and other major events.
  • Collaborate with brand and promotions teams to support ticket sales and match promotion.
  • Manage and update the online public relations (PR) schedule.
  • Assist in production of yearly USMNT Media Guide.
  • Assist in fielding and evaluating requests for media interviews for technical staff and players.
  • Assist in organizing and executing media interviews for various platforms (print, internet, TV, radio, podcast).
  • Liaise with MLS, Liga MX and European club press officers regarding MNT players as necessary.

Requirements
 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in media relations and/or public relations, preferably in professional sports.
  • Strong writing and editing skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of men’s soccer, both in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure environments and meet tight deadlines.
  • Must be able to connect “micro” details to the “macro” vision and mission. 
  • Willingness to travel extensively and work weekends.

Desired Qualifications  
  • Experience in media relations, sports statistics, and PR within large-scale sporting events.
  • Understanding of diverse media and PR strategies across multiple platforms, including social media, long-form content, and video production.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and project management experience. 
  • Prior experience with media operations at international soccer tournaments or other global sporting events.
  • Passport required and readiness for international travel.
