Position Summary
San Diego Wave FC is seeking a passionate and driven Individual Development Coach. This person will have a sole focus on the technical development of players within our environment and lead the individual development process within the club.
The role reports into the Head Coach and will work closely with the technical, performance, medical and mental performance staff to implement a holistic approach to player development. This role will play a critical part in maximizing player performance through individualized training design, technical and tactical development, collaborative performance planning, and consistent player feedback.
This position requires a high-performance mindset, exceptional communication skills, and a deep understanding of elite player development within the women’s professional game.
Key Responsibilities
Individual Player Development
- Design and deliver individual development plans based on technical, tactical, physical, and mental performance objectives.
- Conduct position-specific and supplemental on-field training sessions before, during after team training.
- Collaborate with coaching, performance, medical and mental performance staff to identify growth opportunities through video analysis, training observations, and match performance data.
- Provide consistent, constructive feedback to players with clear development benchmarks and accountability measures.
- Support return-to-play integration plans in collaboration with medical and performance staff.
Technical Coaching
- Reinforce the club’s playing philosophy and tactical principles through individualized coaching interventions.
- Develop position-specific training methodologies aligned with the club’s game model and positional profiles.
- Utilize video analysis and performance insights to improve player decision-making and game understanding.
- Assist in the planning and execution of team training sessions as needed.
High Performance Team Collaboration
- Work collaboratively across sporting departments to align player development with team objectives.
- Participate in player reviews, performance meetings, and long-term succession planning discussions.
- Maintain detailed player development records, progress reports, and training objectives.
- Support youth player integration and transition planning for emerging players when applicable.
Qualifications
- USSF “A” License, UEFA A License, or equivalent elite coaching qualification required.
- Minimum 3–5 years of coaching experience in elite youth, collegiate, or professional environments.
- Demonstrated experience in individual player development and position-specific coaching.
- Strong understanding of modern tactical principles and player development methodologies.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary high-performance environments.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with video analysis and performance technology platforms preferred.
- Passion for women’s soccer and commitment to athlete-centered development.
Preferred Experience
- Experience within professional women’s football/soccer environments.
- Background in talent development, pathway programming, or transition-to-pro environments.
- Familiarity with data-informed coaching and individualized performance planning.
- Multilingual communication skills are a plus.
