San Diego Wave Fútbol Club is on a mission to build a world class home for players and fans. The Assistant Athletic Trainer assists the Head Athletic Trainer / Director of Medical with the day-to-day delivery of comprehensive sports medicine services for San Diego Wave FC players.  This position is responsible for supporting injury prevention, evaluation, and treatment.  The Assistant Athletic Trainer will provide daily training and match coverage, contribute to individualized player care plans, maintain accurate medical documentation, and communicate effectively with players and members of the multidisciplinary performance and medical team.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong clinical judgment, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to operate effectively in the fast-paced, high-performance environment. The Assistant Athletic Trainer may assume responsibilities of the Head Athletic Trainer when delegated and will contribute to maintaining continuity of medical care throughout the season.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Provide comprehensive medical coverage for team training sessions, preseason activities, home matches, and away competitions as assigned.
  • Prepare and maintain the athletic training environment before and after training sessions and matches.
  • Ensure appropriate medical equipment, supplies, emergency equipment, and treatment resources are available for training and competition.
  • Assist with preparation and execution of match-day medical operations.
  • Monitor environmental and field conditions and communicate potential health and safety concerns to appropriate staff.
  • Travel with the team as assigned throughout the NWSL season, including preseason, regular-season, and postseason competition.
  • Complete comprehensive EMR records per league standards
  • Comply with OSHA standards regarding blood born pathogens
  • Keep training room and clinic area safe, clean and organized
  • Assist Head AT in maintaining a complete and up to date roster of player health and participation records in the Healthy Roster electronic medical record system
  • Assist Head AT in reporting insurance/worker’s compensation claims for players to front office staff
  • Compile reports as required by NWSL and team leads
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential medical records in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, league policies, and organizational procedures.
  • Document evaluations, treatments, rehabilitation sessions, injuries, and player progress using the club's designated medical record system
  • Assist with annual physical examinations, baseline testing, and other required medical assessments
  • Assist with insurance, injury, incident, and other medical documentation as required
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of medical supplies and communicate purchasing needs to the Head Athletic Trainer.
  • Assist with implementation and adherence to club emergency action plans and medical protocols.
  • Stay current with developments in sports medicine, athletic training, rehabilitation, injury prevention, and women's professional soccer
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities
  • Contribute to a culture of evidence-based practice, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the Medical & Athletic Training department
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills required to work effectively with players, coaches, other team personnel and NWSL staff
  • Comply with all NWSL medical policies, protocol and Game Operations Manual
  • Participate in activities/meetings/programs as required by NWSL
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required

Qualifications:
  • NATABOC-certified Athletic Trainer in good standing
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university, or equivalent experience
  • Master’s degree (or higher) in Athletic Training or a related healthcare field
  • Possess personal professional liability insurance
  • Demonstrated knowledge of injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency care 
  • Strong understanding of the physical and medical demands of soccer
  • Ability to work extended, non-traditional, and variable hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel to all away games.
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, and move equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds independently and without assistance
  • Ability to stand and remain physically active for extended periods, including shifts of up to 8 hours, with the ability to walk, bend, stoop, reach, and perform other physical activities required to support equipment operations
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding player medical information
  • Passion for the success of Women’s Professional Sports 
Preferred:
  • Experience working with professional or elite female athletes
  • Experience with soccer-specific rehabilitation and return-to-performance programming
  • Experience working with VALD Performance technology
  • Experience with manual therapy and field-based rehabilitation
  • Experience using electronic medical records and sports medicine/performance technology
  • Experience collaborating within a multidisciplinary high-performance environment
  • Bilingual communication skills – English, Spanish, Portuguese
  • Experience working with international athletes and complex travel schedules

This is a full-time role based in San Diego, California. Depending on education, skill set, and experience, the annual base salary range is $70,000 to $80,000.
