Communications/Community Relations: Media Manager
Purpose: The Manager of Media Relations for the Timbers is responsible for all day-to-day elements of the club’s communications department. This employee will work closely with all departments of the organization – including Soccer Operations, Ticket Sales, Sponsorship, Community Relations, Marketing and Stadium Operations – to communicate the club’s overall messages, with an emphasis on the sporting elements of the club.
 
Additionally, this role also will be responsible for supervising all media relations elements of the Communications department, including media relations elements for Portland Thorns FC and the Timbers Academy program.
 
Essential Functions/ Major Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with club and league personnel, and members of the media on a daily basis
  • Assist media with daily access and coordinate interview requests
  • Attend daily training sessions and arrange regular media availability periods
  • Research, write and distribute club-related press releases, postgame recaps and game notes
  • Write corporate and event-related press releases as assigned
  • Manage content and production of teams game day roster card
  • Work closely with each department in the organization to identify and deliver story pitches to local, national and international media outlets
  • Lead PR stakeholder on Spanish-language outreach and fulfillment for Timbers and Thorns FC 
  • Maintain and update online media resource pages and media guide
  • Assist in maintaining statistics, records and club archives
  • Assist with media credentialing 
  • Manage press box during Timbers home match days and assist media members at all home events
  • Supervise media access period in locker room and assist with broadcast requests postgame
  • Assist press box management and gameday responsibilities for Thorns FC as assigned
  • Travel with the team for road matches
  • Assist with social media responsibilities as assigned
  • Assist with coordination of press conferences and special events
  • Assist with game day staff and interns, including scheduling and budgeting
  • Track club-related media coverage on a daily basis

  • Ability to work all games as assigned
  • Strong knowledge of MLS, NWSL, the Timbers and Thorns FC organization and professional and college sports
  • Ability to effectively develop, communicate and present message to key decision-makers and constituents
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work within a team environment
  • Knowledge of international soccer
  • Ability to adapt, adjust, be responsive under tight deadlines and fluid situations in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

Education:
  • Bachelors or four-year college degree
  • Minimum of two years of experience working in professional or collegiate sports
  • Experience writing for sports organization or related entity
