The Philadelphia Union Staff Writer is the lead contributor to written content on club web/digital channels.  As the lead staff writer, the individual will be solely responsible for crafting the “authoritative soccer voice” of the content team in written form.  While other roles on the content team are focused on video, entertainment and web analytics, this role requires a very deep, analytical understanding of the game.

  • Develop the overall soccer-specific written content strategy for
  • Create weekly, monthly and annual written soccer-specific content calendar
  • Serve as a lead contributor to the weekly “newsroom” content development process by pitching headlines, establishing buy-in and aligning internal resources
  • Deliver finished written pieces, post to website and analyze performance
  • Deliverables to include (but not limited to):
    • Tactical previews
    • Analytical post-game analysis
    • Player of the week analysis
    • Roster/lineup analysis
    • Player/personnel analysis
    • Long-form player profile/insights/narratives
    • Academy features
    • Academy game analysis
    • Academy player/coach analysis
    • Youth club/partner features

  • Bachelors degree in journalism, communications, marketing or similar field
  • Minimum of 2 years in soccer-specific analytical writing
  • Strong communicator, relationship builder and organizer of information
  • Soccer-specific analytical writing samples must be available upon application
  • Ability to work weekdays in an office environment and nights/weekends as the game schedule dictates
