Who are we hiring?
An experienced and motivated attorney who will join the growing legal team supporting Kansas City Current’s global multi-entity operations spanning professional sports, youth development, and real estate ventures. The Senior Corporate Counsel will have a strong background in transactional work and provide strategic oversight on key commercial agreements and high-risk transactions, while partnering with internal resources on day-to-day contract execution. The Senior Corporate Counsel will have proven experience in one or more of the following areas:; data protection, privacy and AI; contracts; intellectual property; employment and labor law; investigations; real estate; technology, compliance and/or risk management while providing day-to-day legal oversight of a multinational business or clients. The role will partner with Ownership and senior executives in the global Kansas City Current organization, human resources and applicable business lines and will coordinate with other members of the legal department to develop integrated advice.
What will you do?
As a critical member of the KC Current legal team, the Assistant General Counsel/Senior Corporate Counsel is a critical thinker that likes to work in a face-paced environment, has a proven track record of being able to multi-task and meet critical deadlines with shifting priorities and is eager to apply his/her strong legal background to the sports industry. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Partner with business units and Ownership to provide practical, strategic and expert legal advice on issues related to complex business and legal matters related to the club, club facilities and applicable leagues;
- Provide solution-driven legal counsel across a wide spectrum of legal subject areas relevant to Kansas City Current’s global programs and operations;
- Support legal aspects of stadium, training facility, and real estate development and operations;
- Advise on leases, development partnerships, land use, and related regulatory matters;
- Review, draft, and lead negotiations of contracts, agreements, policies, procedures, and related documents;
- Advise internal stakeholders on legal risk, compliance obligations, and practical risk-mitigation strategies;
- Support compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies across multiple jurisdictions;
- Conduct legal research and analysis on emerging or complex issues and translate findings into clear, actionable guidance;
- Support organizational initiatives involving areas such as technology and data, employment practices, internal investigations, intellectual property, finance, grants, and program operations;
- Manage and coordinate external counsel relationships on specialized matters;
- Support organizational governance, ethics, and compliance matters, including policies, whistleblower or ethics issues, and appropriate escalation of legal risk;
- Support legal operations and continuous improvement initiatives;
- Enhance legal processes and systems to support scalable and effective risk management;
- Participate in multi-disciplinary projects and problem-solving initiatives;
- Develop and deliver training, guidance materials, and capacity-building resources on legal and compliance topics for staff;
- Collaborate closely with colleagues across the Kansas City Current’s global operations and program teams;
- Foster strong relationships across the division’s legal, governance, risk and security teams, counsel in other regions, and other divisions;
- Keep current on industry-wide legal trends and developments; and
- Perform projects / duties as identified, defined and assigned by the General Counsel and/or Ownership.
What do you need to succeed?
- 8-10 years of corporate legal experience. Demonstrated experience serving as in-house counsel in a global organization highly preferred.
- Proven experience in one or more of the following areas: data protection, privacy and AI; contracts; intellectual property; employment and labor law; investigations; real estate; technology, compliance and/or risk management.
- Experience in multi-entity or high-growth environments
- Ability to attend events and be present at facilities as needed.
- Ability to work independently and effectively despite ambiguity and rapid change.
- Excellent writing skills, with a focus on providing practical advice.
- Outstanding oral communication skills, with a focus on clearly and simply conveying complex. employment law concepts, risks, and options to HR and other internal clients.
- Ability to work on several different projects and meet critical deadlines.
- A demonstrated ability to collaborate with other legal and business professionals in a complex organization with a focus on delivering results efficiently.
- A keen business sense with strong judgment, negotiation, drafting, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work efficiently, meet demanding deadlines, and balance multiple, and sometimes competing, priorities.
- Juris Doctorate (JD) or equivalent from an accredited law school.
- Bar membership in good standing.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States.
Special requirements of the Job:
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, inclusive of weekends, nights (event evenings & overnight operation shifts) and holidays.
- Ability to monitor company communications and respond to time-sensitive matters with senior executives.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and move around the venue for extended periods of time, often during events or facility setup and breakdown.
- Requires occasional bending, squatting, and reaching overhead to handle various tasks related to facility management, equipment, and event preparation.
- Must be capable of working in physically demanding environments, including navigating stairs, ramps, and elevated platforms during venue conversions.
- Ability to work outdoors continuously for extended periods of time in all weather conditions
