Position Description
The Assistant Coach, Chicago Fire FC, supports the Chicago Fire FC Head Coach with players’ training and performance. This individual helps develop a core group of players who can excel and thrive on the international level. This person will also support and uphold the Chicago Fire FC’s culture and values that positively reflect our goals.

Context of the Chicago Fire FC Assistant Coach
  • Serves as the Assistant Coach of our Chicago Fire FC First Team
  • Works to support a High-Performance environment for the Chicago Fire FC
  • Works with the elite soccer players of our club from experienced players to young high potentials
  • Commits to the mission, objectives, and policies of Chicago Fire FC

Purpose of the Chicago Fire FC Assistant Coach
  • Contributes to the overall vision and mission of Chicago Fire FC
  • Assists in selecting players that meet the criteria of a Chicago Fire FC player
  • Supports in the implementation of strategies, formations and principles aligned with the Chicago Fire FC Game Model to compete against other teams
  • Aids in the evaluation of the players and the environment to ensure that players can reach their full potential
  • Provides expertise, performs duties and tasks specific to what is asked to perform at the highest levels

Coaching games
  • Assists in selecting lineups and makes team decisions that facilitate the most significant opportunity for a positive result and quality performance 
  • Supports in the creation of development and performance goals for the team and individual  
  • Aids in the creation and execution plan based on the style of play, principles, and opponent-based strategies  
  • Creates a high-performance environment and encourages players to take responsibility for decision making 
  • Evaluates the game with players and Head and Assistant coaches 

Coaching training sessions
  • Aids in the formulation of goals and training sessions with the Chicago Fire FC Head coach based on the established style of play principles and strategies, analysis of the team, individuals, and opposition 
  • Creates an environment that forces and encourages players to think about solutions before upcoming games 
  • Manages and communicates responsibilities to his/her superiors 
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the training session with players and the Chicago Fire FC Technical Staff 
  • Helps establish and implement Chicago Fire FC culture within the team environment 
  • Helps in devising performance and development goals in collaboration with the team for every MLS season
  • Works on building a cohesive team  
  •  Prepares the team to perform under pressure 

Leading the player
  • Adopts a player-centric mentality to coaching and teaching 
  • Informs, advises and supports individual players on the field on both the on-field and off-field aspects of playing for the Chicago Fire FC 
  •  Empowers individual players taking responsibility for their development (and career as a professional player) 
  •  Engages in frequent and proactive communication with the player

Primary Responsibilities 

The Chicago Fire FC Assistant Coach
  • Reports directly to the Head Coach  
  • Collaborates with the Sporting Director, the General Manager, the Head of Football Strategy, the Head of Performance, the Head of Recruitment and the Chicago Fire FC Head Coach to create the best environment for our players
  •  Helps implement a clear strategy that corresponds with the Chicago Fire FC vision, mission and Style of Play 
  •  Supports in the implementation and education of positional responsibilities and integrates practiced routines to breed automaticity 
  •  Contributes to talent identification and scouting in a variety of capacities 
  •  Give players individual feedback on performance in training and games including video clips
  •  Complete goal setting and performance review discussions with staff on an annual basis

Tasks and Duties of the Chicago Fire FC Assistant Coach
  •  Working collaboratively with staff members to implement and execute Chicago Fire FC Mission, Objectives, Strategy, and Tactics (MOST). 
  • Works together in creating a plan with development and performance goals throughout with short- and long-term goals 
  • Identifies players and helps shape the roster in collaboration with Staff members 
  • Has a comprehensive understanding of the MLS player pool 
  • Helps manage the player roster and positional depth chart 
  •  Supports and collaborates with Chicago Fire FC MLS Next Pro and MLS Next teams creating positional profiles for depth development and integrated alignment between our Teams 
  • Prepare opponent analysis presentation and present it to the team for all opponents 

Assistant Coach Specializing in Managing 1st Team Analysists
  • Manages 1st team Analyst staff, including daily tasks, recurring analysis, special projects, performance reviews, and year-end bonus evaluation
  • Assists analyst team in preparing opponent scouting report for technical staff 
  • Has detailed understanding of opponents’ strengths and weaknesses 
  • Integrates data into key findings for opponent analysis 
  • Delivers opponent scouting report to players in team meeting format 
  • Delivers individualized content to players to prepare them for upcoming match  
  • Works with “sparring team” on field to prepare team for upcoming game

Coaching Model Assistant Coach
  • Focused on detail of all phases in pre-match scouting, training, in-game, and post-match analysis

  • Scout opponent and prepare material surrounding game plan for upcoming games
  • Provide thoughts for coaching staff discussion on all phases
  • Design and lead/assist head coach in team exercises during training sessions
  • Organize and lead small group functional and individual training sessions
  • Organize and lead small group and individual positional meetings
  • Lead individual development programs of designated players
  • Contribute to discussions with Technical Staff around game plan variations
  • Help develop in-game metric and statistics which facilitate the tracking of team and individual performance
  • Analysis and coding of team performance to support team and individual feedback
  • Lead research projects and case studies of best practices to continue to develop our game model
  • Develop strong club relationships through periodically attending academy matches or training sessions
  • Track and observe youth players in the player pathway 
  • Collaborate with all the coaches to support and strengthen our principles of play and game model
  • In collaboration with other coaches, develop and deliver leading, innovative, evidence based tactical strategies within our framework that create competitive advantages for our team
  • In collaboration with other coaches, develop detailed positional player profiles

Managing the performance environment 
  • Supports in the performance environment for players and staff 
  • Manages the conditions for an optimal on – and off-the-field performance for players, coaches and staff 
  • Evaluates the performance environment and shares areas of improvement on realistic, achievable objectives 
  • Emphasizes the self-responsibility and fosters accountability of players coaches, and staff in creating the best working relationship amongst teammates and staff 

Developing and implementing leadership
  • Serves as a role model for leadership 
  • Communicates in an open, honest manner to players, staff members, and clubs 
  • Maintains a connection to all players within the organization galvanizing a growth mindset throughout  
  • Flexible and adaptable with (un)expected problems and challenges 
  • Identifies useful sources of information to discover innovations or current trends in the field of coaching

Minimum Qualifications 
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Strong knowledge of soccer
  • Capable of working in fast-paced and demanding environments
  • U.S. Soccer B License or UEFA equivalent 
  • Proficient experience with Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook)
  • Experience in tournament formats 
  • Fluent in the English language  
  • Intrinsically driven

Desired Qualifications 
  • Passion for soccer
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)  
  • Understanding and integration of high performance and physical periodization 
  • Analysis skillset before and during games identifying the opportunities and weaknesses of our opponent 
  • Assesses and deals with forces that are promoting and inhibiting positive change 
  • Thorough institutional knowledge of vision, mission, goals, technical plan, policies, practices, and procedures 
  • Previous experience with a club or national team
