USA Track & Field (USATF) is a key partner in the delivery of the World Athletics Championships, Oregon 21, taking place August 6-15, 2021, in Eugene, Oregon.  Held for the first time in the USA, the Championships will showcase the world’s best athletes in action across track and field disciplines, marathons, and race walks.  USATF is assisting the local organizing committee, Oregon21, LLC, in finding a Marketing and Communications Director to help deliver an amazing event.

The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for the development and execution of the World Athletics Championships marketing, communications and ticketing strategies. The position provides leadership and management of the marketing and communications teams and takes responsibility for related activities for Oregon21.  Additionally, the incumbent will take a lead role on the successful achievement of ticket sales targets.  This position will work as a key member of the Oregon21 management team throughout the planning stages and during the events.
This position will be based in Eugene, Oregon.

  • Provide planning and leadership to the marketing and communications areas, ensuring appropriate resources, systems and competencies are in place
  • Lead on the development and implementation of the ticketing, marketing and communications strategies delivering them on time, within budget, to a consistently high standard and to meet targets
  • Lead and manage the marketing and communications activities of the Championships to all constituents
  • Lead the ticket sales campaign focused on acquisition and build of a core database of fans. 
  • Provide regular status reports on progress against plan
  • Manage the marketing and communications teams to best deliver the Championships objectives using the available resources
  • Support the appointment of and oversee the management of appropriate agencies to deliver services in support of the Championships
  • Manage the Oregon21 brand including overseeing the development and implementation of the Championships venue and city dressing
  • Work closely with the other partner organizations to develop an activity calendar and joined up marketing plans to ensure that the resources are harnessed for the benefit of the Championships
  • Develop and maintain key stakeholder and supplier relationships relevant in achieving the objectives of the Championships
  • Participate in Oregon21 planning processes
  • Support the leadership team with other management tasks as required.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in relevant subject
  • Professional marketing and/or communications qualificationBachelor’s degree or equivalent in relevant subjects are preferreBachelor’s degree or equivalent in relevant subjectd

  • Proven track record of success in a senior marketing or communications role
  • Proven track record of delivering to targets, ideally ticket sales
  • Experience of CRM systems and digital marketing
  • Extensive experience in the management of people 
  • Experience in event management and/or complex project environments 
  • Exposure to all key aspects of delivering a major event, preferably with Athletics (track and field)
  • Experience in developing and documenting plans
  • Experience managing service providers
Previous work in generating, managing, tracking and reporting on multiple concurrent deliverables in various phases of development
