The Pittsburgh Thunderbirds, Pittsburgh’s Professional ultimate frisbee team, is seeking a Sports Editorial Intern for the 2025–26 season. This role provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in sports media, combining journalism, storytelling, and communications within a professional team environment.
As a Sports Editorial Intern, you will serve as the primary storyteller for the Pittsburgh Thunderbirds — attending games, practices, tryouts, and other events, interviewing players and coaches, and producing engaging written content for the team’s website, newsletters, and social media channels. You’ll play a key role in shaping how fans experience and understand the team’s journey throughout the season.
Responsibilities
·        Write game recaps, player features, and opinion pieces that capture the voice and excitement of the Thunderbirds season.
·        Attend Thunderbirds home games and select practices to conduct postgame interviews and gather quotes.
·        Collaborate with the media, social, and marketing teams to ensure consistent brand messaging across all channels.
·        Assist with press releases, newsletters, and long-form storytelling initiatives.
·        Contribute creative ideas for written content that highlight team culture and community involvement.
·        Maintain deadlines and uphold professional journalistic standards of accuracy and tone.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
·        Strong writing and editing skills with an ability to match organizational tone and style.
·        Passion for sports journalism and storytelling.
·        Ability to conduct player and coach interviews with professionalism.
·        Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
·        Self-motivated and comfortable working independently or as part of a team.
·        Familiarity with AP Style and digital publishing platforms (WordPress or similar).
·        Ability to attend Thunderbirds home games and select practices (January – August).
·        Proficiency with Microsoft Office (i.e. Word)/Google Suite (i.e. Google Drive) required.
Education and Experience
·        Pursuing or recently completed a degree in journalism, communications, English, media studies, or a related field preferred.
·        Previous experience writing for a publication, blog, or team site is a plus but not required.
This is an unpaid internship eligible for school credit.
