The Communications & Social Media Manager supports the organization’s day-to-day communications needs while leading and maintaining USATF’s social media strategy, with a focus on promoting junior, youth, elite, and professional athlete programs. 

This role includes developing and executing a social media strategy, creating and managing a social media calendar, and ensuring all content is posted on the appropriate channels with the correct tone and voice. 

Additional responsibilities include producing written content (press releases, blogs, articles), aggregating press clippings, maintaining athlete biographies, assisting with the credentialing process, and pitching stories to media outlets. The Communications & Social Media Manager also oversees the USATF Athlete of the Week program and manages the publications calendar. 

Key responsibilities include driving social media growth and engagement, establishing a presence on new and emerging platforms, and coordinating with internal teams to ensure timely and accurate communications.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Develop USATF’s social media strategy and define voices/themes for all channels.
  • Build and maintain a social media calendar, coordinating with content producers and other departments to ensure representation across programs.
  • Lead posting, commenting, and engagement activities for all social media platforms.
  • Identify trends and viral moments, strategizing how USATF can participate in the conversation.
  • Engage with posts from a diverse range of USATF constituents through comments, likes, and shares.
  • Manage editing and posting of the USATF Athlete of the Week program.
  • Write press releases, blogs, and event recaps as assigned.
  • Assist in the gathering and distribution of press credentials.
  • Aggregate and distribute outside press clippings.
  • Maintain and update athlete biographies.
  • Manage the USATF publications calendar.

QUALIFICATIONS 
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, public relations, or related field (preferred).
  • 1–3 years of experience in social media management, planning, and trafficking, with a strong understanding of platforms such as Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, and tools like Hootsuite (or similar social media posting platforms).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Olympic sports movement or a related sports communications, media operations, or sports information environment. Knowledge of USATF and an understanding of track & field are significant pluses.
  • Excellent written, oral, and public presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and work with large amounts of quantitative and qualitative data.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS 
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of materials up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work long hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by events.

NON-PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  •  Requires domestic and international travel to major competitions and events.
