Location: Flexible – the role will require 16-18 weeks year in camp and 2-4 hrs weekly for administrative tasks.  
Pay Range: Stipend $50k/year, Annualized with benefits at cost of $50k in total annually 


POSITION PURPOSE 
The Men’s 15s Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for overseeing daily medical operations and medical  care to the men’s 15s senior team, as well as oversight for pathway athletes. Daily operations include but  are not limited to providing injury evaluation, rehabilitative exercise programming, collaboration and  communication with medical team and high performance staff regarding player eligibility, and  documentation of all injuries and rehabilitation in electronic medical record system. The head athletic  trainer must be able to work within a sports medicine team that is comprised of Head team physicians,  manager of medical services, assistant and student athletic trainers, physical therapists, massage  therapists, mental health providers, dietitians, etc. 

It is the responsibility of the Head Athletic Trainer to attend all senior level competitions, both international and domestic, and provide support for Pathway and Academy programs. The Head Athletic  Trainer is to liaise with the USA Rugby Medical Director and Director of Performance Men’s XV on all  sports medicine related issues.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES 
  • Provide Athletic training care (injury prevention programs, injury examination, diagnosis, and  treatment and rehabilitation injuries) to the USA Rugby Men’s 15s athletes. 
  • Document all injuries, illness, and care provided in USA Rugby electronic medical record system  (EMR).
  • Travel to all assigned tournaments, matches, and trainings, international and domestic. • Manage the treatment, care plans and monitoring of USA Rugby Men’s 15s athletes. Collaborate  with USA Rugby Medical Director, USA Rugby Director of 15s High Performance USA Rugby Team  Physicians and medical team members to provide the best care to athletes. 
  • Manage and coordinate all aspects of Athletic Training services including pre-season and in season screening, design and implementation of individualized player injury prevention  programs, rehabilitation programs, and pitch side care. 
  • Work closely with medical team members and USA Rugby High Performance staff in prescribing  injury prevention programs, rehabilitation programs and implementing screening protocols. 
  • Inventory and stocking of all medical supplies and recovery/performance equipment.  
  • Medical equipment maintenance and documentation of services provided to equipment. 
  • Follow all WADA and USADA Anti-Doping policies and procedures. 
  • Comply with all World Rugby standards of care and complete all trainings. 
  • Complete all insurance claim forms.
    • It is the responsibility of the Head Athletic Trainer to submit original claim form. 
    • Work with the Director of Performance Men’s XVand Insurance company to assist  athlete with claims process.
  • Collaborate with USOPC Sports medicine staff.
  • Liaise with pathway and academy medical staff regarding the progress and ongoing treatment of  players.  
  • Provide athletic training services to other USA Rugby teams as assigned by the USA Rugby  Medical Director.  
  • Focus on communication and ensuring smooth transition when players arrive in camp.
  • When players get injured at their clubs, USA Rugby are kept up to date on a weekly basis of the rehabilitation process and “target” return dates to full training.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIS) 

Performance: 
  • Deliver best practice athletic training services to USA Rugby athletes/teams. 
  • Development and implementation of pre-season/in-season screening, injury prevention, and  rehabilitation protocols. 
  • Develop strong and effective communication and working relationships with coaches, players,  and staff members of USA Rugby. 
  • Engage in athletic training CMEs to ensure provider is current with latest research and best  practices.
  • Maintain all licenses and certifications as required. 
  • Document all injuries and care provided in EMR. 

Leadership: 
  • Provide effective leadership and management of medical services to the Men’s 15’s program.

Stakeholders: 
  • Establish productive relationships and ensure effective reporting to the Director of Performance Men’s XV, the Medical Director, and the GM of High Performance. 
  • Establish productive relationships and ensure effective communication regarding player status  and updates to USA Rugby Men’s 15’s Head Coach. 
  • Establish productive relationships and ensure effective communication with players regarding  injuries and care plans.  
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND COMPETENCIES 

Qualifications: 
  • Doctorate of Athletic Training preferred; Master’s degree/equivalency in athletic training or  related field required 
  • Current National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Board of Certification (BOC) certification  required 
  • Current First Aid, CPR, AED certification required 
  • Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification or Performance Enhancement  Specialization (PES) preferred 

Experience: 
  • Preferred 6 years of experience working in rugby or with professional/elite level collision/contact  sports. 

Skill Requirements: 
  • Advanced proficiency in the skills and abilities of an Athletic Trainer, including evaluating injuries  and their severity, developing conditioning and rehabilitation programs, and managing and  treating injuries. 
  • Excellent clinical skills with a strong emphasis in manual therapy. 
  • Excellent communication skills. Effectively communicates with athletes, coaches, team  physicians, medical team and high performance staff. 
  • Ability to handle emergency situations with a calm demeanor, while activating emergency action  plan. 
  • Ability to determine appropriate referrals for athletes to other or additional health care  providers, to provide the best care possible. 
  • Regular and reliable attendance. Ability to reply to correspondents via texts, call, or email in a  timely fashion. 
  • Ability to exercise good, independent clinical judgement and discretion while making sound  decisions in all circumstances.  
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.  
  • Ability to handle confidential information according to HIPAA and FERPA regulations. 
  • Good organizational and planning skills. 
  • Administrative skills in record keeping, charting, basic computer skills with emphasis in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Google, and Electronic Medical Record systems.
