ROLE PURPOSE 

The Assistant Attack Coach supports the Rugby 15s program by delivering high-quality technical and tactical coaching focused on skill development, off-the-ball behaviors, and execution of the team’s attacking philosophy. Working under the direction of the Head Coach, this role contributes to planning, session design, player development, and the implementation of a cohesive attacking game model that enhances team performance.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coach technical attacking skills with a focus on handling, decision-making, catch-pass quality, footwork, support lines, scanning, and off-the-ball work.
  • Assist in developing and implementing an attacking game model that aligns with the team’s identity and leverages the strengths of the playing group.
  • Contribute to individualized player development plans (IDPs) that emphasize attacking skill mastery, situational awareness, and consistency under pressure.
  • Provide clear coaching in the daily training environment, unit sessions, and match day warm-ups, ensuring players understand roles, cues, and expected behaviors.
  • Analyse training and match footage to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for growth, particularly around skill execution, spacing, timing, and support play.
  • Reinforce high-performance behaviors, team values, and the collective standards required for elite performance.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS AND DELIVERABLES


Attack Performance:
  • Improved technical execution in key attacking skills (passing, catching, footwork, breakdown efficiency, decision-making).
  • Improved off-the-ball effort, work rate, support lines, spacing, and scanning behaviors.
  • Measurable progress in linebreak creation, continuity, support effectiveness, and attacking efficiency.

Player Development:
  • Clear progression against individual player development plans (IDPs).
  • Delivery of consistent, high-quality skill sessions tailored to player needs.
  • Increased player understanding and application of attacking principles.

Program Delivery:
  • Effective contribution to training design, unit meetings, video reviews, and opposition analysis.
  • Accurate and timely delivery of feedback to players and staff.
  • Demonstrated alignment between the attack plan and the overall team strategy.

Learning & Review:
  • Active involvement in team pre-briefs, debriefs, and seasonal reviews.
  • Use of objective and subjective metrics to track development of attacking skills and behaviors.
  • Maintenance of organized reports, learning documents, and session plans.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND COMPETENCIES


Qualifications:
  • Coaching certifications appropriate to high-performance rugby (USA Rugby, World Rugby, or equivalent).
  • Continued pursuit of technical and coaching education (preferred).

Experience:
  • Proven experience coaching attack within a professional or senior international environment.
  • Demonstrated success in developing players’ attacking skills and understanding of off-the-ball roles.
  • Prior experience working in a professional academy or international pathway team.
  • Experience analyzing video and using performance tools to support player development.

Competencies:
  • Strong understanding of attacking principles, skill acquisition, and off-the-ball behaviors in rugby union.
  • Ability to design and execute sessions that build skill mastery, decision-making, and consistency under pressure.
  • Clear communication skills with the ability to provide concise, actionable feedback.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational skills and a commitment to continuous improvement and high-performance standards
