Position Summary (this is a part-time hourly position) 
The National Team Pathways Coach plays a key role in building the future of USA Cycling’s Para-cycling program. This position is responsible for identifying, evaluating, coaching, and developing emerging para-cyclists across all sport classes on road and track. The primary purpose of this role is to create a clear, consistent, and sustainable pathway that moves athletes from grassroots and rehabilitation settings into the national team and international high-performance pipeline.
 
The Pathways Coach will lead national talent identification efforts, guide early-stage coaching and development, coordinate athlete classification, and create domestic racing and development opportunities that support long-term success. This role works closely with the National Team Head Coach, Sr. Director of Para-cycling, the USOPC, rehabilitation partners, adaptive sports organizations, and event organizers to ensure athletes receive the right support at the right time. This is a hands-on coaching and development role focused on identifying potential, building structure, and supporting athlete progression into the national team environment.
 
This role reports to the National Team Head Coach, Para-Cycling Road and Track, and works under the strategic direction of the Sr. Director of Para-Cycling Programs.
 
What You’ll Do
 Talent Identification & Development
·         Lead a targeted national talent identification strategy for Para-cycling, including outreach, evaluation, and athlete recruitment
·         Develop and implement a systematic approach to early athlete evaluation, onboarding, and coaching aligned with USA Cycling’s “What it Takes to Win” framework
·         Build relationships with rehabilitation hospitals, adaptive sports organizations, military veteran groups, clubs, coaches, and community programs
·         Establish a structured evaluation process using performance benchmarks, testing tools, and sport-class–specific criteria
·         Guide athletes through early development stages with remote and in-person coaching support
·         Create and manage Individual Performance Plans (IPPs) that outline long-term performance trajectories
 
Athlete Classification Coordination
·         Serve as the primary point of contact for athlete classification within USA Cycling’s Sports Performance Para-cycling pathway
·         Work with the USA Cycling Membership and Events Team to secure domestic and international classification opportunities
·         Establish and refine classification pathways that support athlete onboarding and competition readiness
 
Coaching and Performance Integration
·         This role focuses on early-stage and developmental athletes and does not replace or duplicate National Team coaching responsibilities.
·         Provide foundational coaching to pathway athletes until they transition into National Team programming
·         Align coaching methods, expectations, and development standards with the National Team Head Coach
·         Support athletes at development camps, training sessions, and domestic events
·         Collaborate with performance services, medical, and technology partners to ensure holistic athlete support at the pathway level
·         Support early-stage technical skill development, equipment adaptation, and race preparation
·         Primary coach or support coach at DTE training sessions
 
Pathway Systems, Reporting, and Administration
·         Build and maintain a pathway athlete database including performance data, classification status, training engagement, and developmental progress
·         Provide regular pathway updates, reports, and insights to the National Team Head Coach and Sr. Director of Para-cycling Programs to support selection, transition, and development decisions
·         Support the design and implementation of USA Cycling’s broader para-cycling pathway strategy. Contribute to pathway-focused content, workshops, and communication materials for athletes, families, and community partners
 
What We’re Looking For
 The ideal candidate has experience in talent identification, early-stage athlete development, and para-sport engagement. They are comfortable working independently and collaboratively, enjoy hands-on coaching, and are motivated to build a strong development pathway that supports future national team athletes. They communicate well, work effectively with athletes and families, and can navigate the complexity of classification, rehabilitation networks, and grassroots cycling environments.
 
Required Qualifications
  • Coaching experience in para-sport, endurance sport, or talent development.
·         Knowledge of long-term athlete development models

·         Familiarity with classification requirements, eligibility standards, and UCI/IPC processes

·         Ability to coach early-stage athletes across road and track environments

·         Strong organizational skills to manage multiple athletes, schedules, and event demands

·         Comfort working with rehabilitation professionals, athlete families, and adaptive organizations

·         Ability to travel frequently for talent identification, events, and camps

·         Good understanding of Handcycling, Tricycles, Tandems and bicycle adaptations for various physical impairments

 Preferred Qualifications
  • USA Cycling or UCI coaching license
·         Background in exercise science, kinesiology, or adaptive physical education

·         Experience working with disabled veterans, rehab programs, or adaptive sports organizations

·         Experience in event development or grassroots cycling activation

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in an office or remote environment for extended periods
·         Ability to stand for extended periods of time

·         Ability to work in conditions with exposure to extreme weather, such as high and low temperatures and variable precipitation when working at events

·         Ability to travel extensively (estimated up to 30-50%) domestically and/or internationally

·         Ability to manage complex information, meet deadlines, and adapt in a fast-paced environment

·         Occasional lifting up to 40 pounds

·         Evenings and weekend work will be required


Compensation & Benefits
Hourly Pay Range
$20.00 - $25.00 per hour, depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.
