POSITION SUMMARY
USA Lacrosse is looking for a summer Intern to join our Legal team; this will be an unpaid/for credit internship.  If you are currently pursuing your Juris Doctor (JD) in your 2nd or 3rd year and would like to jumpstart your career by gaining hands-on experience by working in the sports industry with a unique chance to learn firsthand about the diverse business operations of a governing body, this could be a great opportunity for you.  Our summer internship program will allow you to learn from professionals in your field of study, understand their "why," work on projects where you can learn about multiple aspects of everyday business, and learn how to collaborate cross-departmentally in a fun, team-oriented environment.  You get to work directly with USA Lacrosse's General Counsel to understand how to support an organization from a legal perspective and manage and mitigate risk, including understanding what is included in the application process to become a National Governing Body (NGB) in sport.

A Typical Day Looks Like…
Essential Functions
  • Drafts and reviews contracts.  
  • Reads and analyzes complex documents and provides a summary for legal counsel.  
  • Drafts legal memoranda and completes legal research and writing projects.  
  • Attends meetings across all departments to learn and provide assistance.

What Will Be Expected of You
  • Report to work each day you are scheduled on time, presenting yourself in a professional manner though your appearance and interactions with others. 
  • Ask questions to help you learn and understand not only what you are doing, but why you are doing It.  
  • Complete a "final report" about your internship experience to Include:
       o   What did you learn about USAL. 
       o   What did you learn about your field of study and the responsibilities of the department you worked in.   
       o   Explain your roles and responsibilities and talk about any project(s) you did.   
       o   Reflect on skills and work habits you learned that you will take with you as you start your career.  
       o   Reflect on skills and work habits you learned that you will not be taking with you as you start your career.   
 
Is This You…
  • Current law student working toward a JD in their 2nd or 3rd year.   
  • Previous working experience in some capacity.  
  • Leadership skills demonstrated through relevant extracurricular activities, along with previous internship experience.  
  • An understanding of the law and a desire to learn about areas such as business affairs, governance matters, intellectual property, policies/guidelines, and risk management.  
  • Demonstrated passion and enthusiasm for law, including the ability to conduct research. 
  • Intermediate computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft 365 products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint.  
  • Enthusiastic go-getter with a “roll up your sleeves” and “get it done” attitude. 
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, follow up/through skills, and the ability to meet deadlines.  
  • Strong communication skills, including interpersonal, verbal and written. 
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.  Must possess a strong “customer first” attitude.     
  • Ability to exercise the appropriate level of discretion and judgment with the capability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive and proprietary information and materials.   
  • Ability to present a professional persona and presence to build relationships and establish credibility.   
  • Willingness to learn about the sport of lacrosse and appreciate the need to develop and fuel the growth of the sport with diversity, inclusion, and equity in mind.  
  • Ability to align with USA Lacrosse’s Mission, Vision, and Values and Strategic Plan to support our initiatives and organizational goals.  
 
Expected Hours of Work
This position works from our headquarters office in Sparks, MD and is generally expected to work Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm.  You may be required to occasionally work longer hours or weekends based on our events and other business needs.  This position will work 20 hours per week.  Please note, we are unable to offer housing with our internships so you will have to have your own local housing and transportation.
