Zawyer Sports & Entertainment is a Jacksonville, Florida-based sports and entertainment company founded in 2018. The organization owns, operates, and/or consults on a growing portfolio that includes professional hockey, baseball, and women’s basketball properties; sports and community facilities; and a full-service marketing agency. Its family of brands includes organizations such as the Jacksonville Icemen, Savannah Ghost Pirates, Greensboro Gargoyles, Charlotte Checkers, Community First Igloo, The UPSHOT League, and 32 Degrees Marketing.  It also includes operation clients such as the Tahoe Knight Monsters, Augusta’s new hockey team and Nashville’s new women’s basketball team.

Given the breadth of the portfolio and the company’s expansion activity across multiple markets, the HR Director will play a strategic and hands-on leadership role in building scalable people practices, supporting culture, and ensuring employment compliance across a dynamic, multi-entity environment.

Position Summary

The HR Director is responsible for leading the human resources function for Zawyer Sports & Entertainment and supporting the company’s corporate office, team operations, facilities, and affiliated business units. This leader will develop and execute HR strategy while also overseeing the day-to-day delivery of talent acquisition, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, compensation and benefits administration, policy development, compliance, training, and HR operations.

The ideal candidate is an experienced, business-minded HR leader who thrives in fast-paced, high-growth environments and can partner effectively with executive leadership, department heads, and field operations across multiple locations. Experience in sports, entertainment, hospitality, venue operations, or other multi-site service businesses is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

HR Strategy and Leadership
  • Serve as the senior HR leader for the organization and align people strategies with company growth plans, operating priorities, and culture goals.
  • Partner with the executive team and business leaders to support workforce planning, organizational design, succession planning, and leadership development.
  • Build scalable HR infrastructure, processes, and policies that can support both established operations and new franchise or business launches.

Talent Acquisition and Onboarding

  • Lead recruiting strategy for corporate, team, venue, marketing agency, and seasonal/event-based roles across multiple markets.
  • Standardize job descriptions, hiring workflows, interview practices, and onboarding programs to improve quality of hire and speed to productivity.
  • Support expansion hiring and launch readiness for new teams, facilities, and business units as the portfolio grows.

Employee Relations, Culture, and Performance

  • Provide coaching and guidance to managers on performance management, investigations, corrective action, conflict resolution, and employee engagement.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and high-accountability culture consistent with the company’s focus on fan experience, community engagement, and operational excellence.
  • Design and administer performance review frameworks, manager training, and employee feedback processes.

Compliance, Policies, and Risk Management

  •  Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Maintain and update employee handbooks, HR policies, job classifications, employment documentation, and recordkeeping practices.
  • Partner with payroll, finance, benefits brokers, legal counsel, and operations leaders on wage and hour compliance, leave administration, workers’ compensation, unemployment claims, and employee safety matters.

Compensation, Benefits, and HR Operations

  •  Help develop competitive compensation structures, incentive programs, and benefits offerings that support attraction and retention across varied employee groups.
  •  Oversee HR systems, employee data integrity, reporting, and metrics related to headcount, turnover, time-to-fill, and employee engagement.
  •  Evaluate opportunities to improve HR technology, workflow automation, and service delivery across the organization.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Collaborate closely with operations, finance, ticketing, revenue, marketing, hockey operations, and venue leaders to support business needs.
  •  Travel to portfolio locations as needed to support site leadership, assess team needs, and ensure consistent execution of HR standards.
  • Represent HR with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment in a visible, service-oriented role.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive HR experience, including senior-level responsibility for employee relations, compliance, recruiting, and HR operations.
  •  3+ years of people leadership and/or demonstrated experience leading HR programs across multiple departments or locations.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. employment law, HR best practices, and multi-state compliance requirements.
  •  Experience building policies, processes, and structure in a growing or evolving organization.
  • Excellent communication, coaching, conflict-resolution, project-management, and change-management skills.
  • High level of discretion with confidential employee and business information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • HR leadership experience in sports, entertainment, hospitality, retail, venue management, live events, or another multi-site service environment.
  •  Experience supporting seasonal staffing models, expansion launches, or distributed field operations.
  • Professional HR certification such as SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, SPHR, or PHR.
  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related discipline.
  • Familiarity with HRIS, applicant tracking systems, payroll coordination, and people analytics reporting.

Work Environment and Schedule

  • This role is expected to be based primarily in Jacksonville, Florida, with regular collaboration across portfolio properties and business units in other markets.
  • Availability for evenings, weekends, and event-related support may be required based on business needs.
  • Travel is expected to support team launches, leadership meetings, investigations, training, and on-site partnership with operating leaders.
  • This role is performed primarily in an office and computer‑based environment. Approximately 75% of the work is sedentary, involving prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer screen.
  • The role also requires regular interaction with employees, managers, and leaders across multiple locations. As such, occasional travel is expected, which may involve extended periods of walking, standing, or sitting during site visits, events, meetings, training sessions, or investigations.
  • The HR Director must be able to communicate effectively, review written and electronic documents, participate in meetings, and navigate a variety of workplace environments, including corporate offices, sports venues, and operational facilities.
