Legal: Compliance Officer
REPORTING TO:     Chief Financial Officer
 
 

SCOPE OF POSITION:
 
The Director of Athlete Safety and Compliance is a full-time exempt position reporting to the Chief Financial Officer.  This position’s primary roles are to support USAWP (USAWP) in all SafeSport matters to include receiving, reporting, and tracking complaints of abuse and misconduct, ensuring compliance and auditing activities are met and communicated, while also promoting education materials and raising the platform of athlete safety.  In addition, ensure USAWP policies and procedures with internal stakeholders are up to date with the latest updates to the Ted Stevens Act, USOPC/USAWP Bylaws, and the USOPC’s NGB Compliance Standards, as appropriate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
 

Athlete Safety and SafeSport Compliance
  • Serve as USAWP’s primary liaison with the U.S. Center for SafeSport’s Compliance and Investigations Resolution, and Education and Outreach, departments in all matters related to athlete safety.
  • Receive and acknowledge all complaints in a timely manner that come through USAWP’s National SafeSport hotline and email.
  •  Be the initial and primary point of contact for all complaints and related questions related to abuse and misconduct.
  •  Provide communication, in a timely manner, to all relevant parties on progress and status of complaints as appropriate. 
  •  Maintain records on all cases logging investigation information, activities, and status of cases.
  • Ensure that there is an effective tracking system and provide updates and status reports as appropriate to USAWP Senior Leadership and Board of Directors.
 


USAWP Member Club Compliance
  • Work with USAWP Leadership, Legal Counsel, Insurance Brokers, and outside consultant to develop the USAWP Club Insurance Program.
  • Develop a USAWP club compliance program that identifies gaps in Athlete Safety and outlines remediation steps.
  •  Develop an audit program to ensure that USAWP member clubs are following the athlete safety standards.
  • Work with club administrators and coaches to incorporate athlete protections education components into their programs and services.
  • Coordinate, produce and oversee the implementation of effective educational programs for all member athletes, their parents, coaches, and clubs. 
  • Serve as an informational resource for clubs, including helping to identify and connect them with local educational partners and resources.
 


USOPC Compliance
  •  Monitor USAWP’s compliance with the USAWP Bylaws, Ted Stevens Act, the USOPC, and the NGB Compliance Standards and take appropriate action to maintain compliance, including by drafting new policies and procedures or advising changes to processes.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with the USOPC Compliance and NGB Audit teams to respond to compliance inquiries, develop remediation plans for identified deficiencies, and oversee execution of those plans in a timely fashion to resolve deficiencies.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to assist in resolving areas of non-compliance, including proactive communication when new compliance requirements are received.
  • Ensure that all compliance matters that USAWP is notified of, by whatever mechanism, are tracked, placed with the appropriate parties, and addressed as appropriate.
  •   Develop strategic priorities for USAWP’s compliance initiatives
  •    Investigate and document inquiries, complaints, and/or concerns requiring a fact-finding investigative process as appropriate
  •  Monitor the USAWP grievance process to ensure that protocol is followed, including for hearing panel appointment and hearing conduct
  • Work with Human Resource Manager to develop a compliance training program for USAWP staff, including conducting live training exercises and tracking participation metrics
 
 


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in law, business administration, or a related field (Master’s Preferred) and 5+ years’ experience preferably as a compliance officer, compliance manager, or related position.
  •  Travel may be required to quarterly board meetings, some events and ongoing training. 
  •  Ability to work with all levels of staff concerning resolution of compliance issues.
  •  Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Extremely well organized, able to work independently and to manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deadlines.
  • Extended hours are to be expected to include some nights, weekends, and holidays. 
  • Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Sheets.
  •  Experience in water polo or other team sports.
  • Maturity, positive attitude, flexibility, high professional standards and ethics, ability to get along with a wide variety of people in a teamwork environment, ability to work with minimal instruction, prioritize, and organize.
