ABOUT PORTLAND FIRE:   
Professional women’s basketball is returning to Rip City. On September 18, 2024, the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) awarded Portland its 15th franchise, bringing the league back to the city for the first time in over two decades. Owned and operated by the Bhathal family through RAJ Sports, the team will make its official debut in 2026 at the Moda Center. Portland is cementing itself as the epicenter of women’s sports, powered by a passionate fan base and a rich basketball culture. THE ROLE:
We are seeking a dynamic and collaborative Director of Communications to shape our public voice, drive media engagement, and tell the stories that will define our brand on and off the court.
This role is a rare opportunity to be part of the communications function of a new sports franchise. You will develop and execute high-impact PR strategies, serve as the point of contact for media, and collaborate closely with both internal teams and external communication agency to elevate the team’s presence locally, nationally, and globally.

WHAT YOU’LL BE UP TO:
· Lead the day-to-day execution of PR and media communications strategies that positions Portland Fire as a cultural leader.
· Serve as the team’s primary media contact, fostering relationships with local, national, and international outlets to generate meaningful coverage for the team, players, staff, and organization.
· Craft compelling press materials, talking points, executive messaging, and brand narratives that reflect our voice, values, and vision.
· Contribute to brand and partnership campaigns with earned media strategies that elevate visibility and deepen community and fan connection.
· Partner with internal teams to develop and execute multi-channel communications strategies across earned, social, experiential, and influencer marketing.
· Support visibility and thought leadership opportunities for players, coaches, and front office executives through media training, placements, and public speaking moments.
· Work closely with team broadcasters / producers to drive key messages
· Maintain a forward-looking PR calendar that aligns with team’s marketing, community, and partnership priorities.
· Oversee game-day PR functions (game notes, media guides, seating charts, credentials, pre/post press conferences, etc)
· Serve as the primary PR contact on the road with the Fire

WHAT IT TAKES:
· 8+ years of relevant professional experience in communications, public relations, or media strategy (sports or women’s basketball experience strongly preferred).
· Proven success in an in-house communications role, ideally within a major league sports team.
· Exceptional writing, editing, and messaging development skills across all forms of communication.
· Strong understanding of digital and traditional media landscapes, as well as basketball and influencer culture.
· Proven track record of developing and implementing successful communications strategies aligned with business objectives.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment effectively.
· Willingness to work a flexible schedule and travel with the team, including evenings, weekends, and home game days.
