Founded in 2012, Portland Thorns FC have set the standard for fan support and on-field success in women’s soccer since its inaugural 2013 season. One of the world’s most supported women’s soccer clubs, Portland has led the league in attendance for eight seasons and set a new club playoff attendance record last year with 25,218 fans supporting Thorns FC in the 2023 semifinal match at Providence Park. Thorns FC have won the NWSL Championship a league-record three times (2013, 2017, 2022) and finished as runners-up in 2018. The club has made the postseason a league-high nine times and has won the NWSL Shield in 2016 and 2021.

THE ROLE:
As the Community Impact Manager for the Portland Thorns, you will play a key role in developing and executing meaningful community engagement and social impact initiatives that strengthen the connection between the club and the broader Portland community. Working closely with the Community Impact Director, you will lead programs, cultivate relationships with local partners, and help ensure the Thorns’ platform drives lasting, positive change.

THE ROLE:
As the Community Impact Manager for the Portland Thorns, you will play a key role in developing and executing meaningful community engagement and social impact initiatives that strengthen the connection between the club and the broader Portland community. Working closely with the Community Impact Director, you will lead programs, cultivate relationships with local partners, and help ensure the Thorns’ platform drives lasting, positive change.
This role requires a highly organized, proactive self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can independently manage multiple projects from concept to execution. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator and problem-solver who can represent the club in the community, build collaborative relationships across departments and external organizations, and serve as a strategic thought partner to the Community Impact Director.
WHAT YOU’LL BE UP TO:
Program & Project Management: Manage and execute community initiatives aligned with the organization’s mission and strategic priorities. Develop timelines, manage competing priorities, and proactively identify solutions to ensure successful execution of programs that advance social inclusion, youth development, and equitable community access.
Partnership Support: Maintain, and grow relationships with local nonprofits, schools, community organizations, and corporate partners. Coordinate partnership activations and ensure partners have the tools they need to succeed.
Volunteer Engagement: Manage volunteer initiatives involving staff, fans, and players, including recruitment, communication, logistics, and participation tracking for community service projects and events.
Philanthropic Program Support: Support the planning, execution, and promotion of charitable initiatives, including donation drives, grantmaking efforts, fundraising campaigns, and other community investment opportunities.
Event Execution: Lead the planning and execution of community events, player appearances, and matchday activations, ensuring all projects are delivered on time, within budget, and with strong attention to detail.
Impact Measurement & Reporting: Track and evaluate program outcomes by collecting data, stories, and community feedback to demonstrate the impact of the club’s community initiatives.
Storytelling & Communications: Partner with Marketing and Communications to develop content and storytelling opportunities that amplify the organization’s community programs and impact.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Support: Support initiatives that foster equity, accessibility, and inclusion both within the organization and throughout the broader community
Additional Responsibilities: Support other departmental and organizational initiatives as needed and perform other duties as assigned. This role requires flexibility to work Portland Thorns home matches, as well as occasional evenings, weekends, and community events throughout the season.
WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A THORN:
- 3–5 years of experience in roles in Community Impact adjacent, event management, or a related field.
- Passion for community engagement, social impact, and connecting people to purpose.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple projects, balance competing priorities, and execute with exceptional attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience developing project plans, timelines, and organizational systems to ensure successful execution across departments, partners, and stakeholders.
- Proven track record of planning and executing successful events and programs, including logistics, budgeting, and resource management.
- Highly proactive self-starter with strong critical-thinking skills and the ability to anticipate needs, solve problems, and identify solutions.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal teams, community partners, and external stakeholders.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with a commitment to follow-through, accountability, and delivering high-quality work.
- Creative thinker with the ability to develop innovative programming and adapt to evolving community needs.
- A team-first mindset with a desire to collaborate and support others to achieve shared goals.
- Passion for soccer and a commitment to using sport as a platform to create positive change in the community.
