Overview

The New Orleans Pelicans are seeking multiple individuals to play an important public-facing role. The mascot coordinators help bring the team’s mascot, Pierre the Pelican, to life for our fans and community. This costumed position does not require prior mascot experience; however, it requires a captivating personality and the ability to create special moments for people of all ages and abilities without saying a word. By appearing at Pelicans home games as well as community events, the mascot coordinators create goodwill for the team and help cultivate the next generation of Pelicans fans. This part-time position is compensated on an hourly basis and requires a commitment for at least the duration of the 2021-22 NBA season. This role does not require athletic ability, but it does require physical stamina. Its a great opportunity for college students or people who enjoy working in live entertainment. Please note that candidates must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in order to be eligible for this position, due to the NBA’s health & safety protocols.

 

Application Process

Interested individuals must apply online no later than Saturday November 20th. All applicants will then be interviewed in-person on Sunday November 21st. Details for the in-person portion are as follows.

 

Interview Date: Sunday, November 21st

Time: Sign-in begins at 3:30pm and interviews will begin promptly at 4pm.

Location: Smoothie King Center, Meeting Room B. The entrance is on Dave Dixon Drive.

Parking: Please park in Lot 4, which is at the corner of Dave Dixon Drive & Magnolia Street.

Attire: Business casual.

Core Responsibilities

  • Serve as a positive community ambassador for the Pelicans brand.
  • Appear at Pelicans home games, which includes greeting fans, photo stations and seat visits.
  • Make live or virtual community appearances as requested by the Pelicans or their partners.
  • Participate in photo shoots and the filming of content as requested by the Pelicans or their partners.
  • Adhere to all NBA mascot performance guidelines and protocols.
  • Maintain the integrity of the mascot costume, including basic cleaning and repair.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Criteria/Qualifications

  • Must be an outgoing, positive individual who can easily connect with fans of all ages and abilities.
  • Must be able to read social cues to understand the level of engagement each fan may want.
  • Must be in good physical condition and be able to wear heavy costumes and stand or walk for extended periods of time, as well as work in hot or inclement weather.
  • Must be able and willing to work irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and the ability to travel for appearances throughout the New Orleans metropolitan area.
  • Must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19, due to NBA health & safety protocols.

Position Details:

  • This is a part-time, hourly position with the New Orleans Pelicans organization.
  •  “Appearances” may include Pelicans home games, non-gameday live events, virtual appearances, or the filming of content as requested by the Pelicans or their partners.
  • Mascot must submit detailed timesheets for every appearance, including on gamedays.
  • If the NBA, or another NBA team, requests that the Mascot attend events on their behalf, the Mascot is entitled to retain 100% of the compensation from that event.
  • Should the Mascot travel (by car) more than 50 miles from the Smoothie King Center for a work assignment, they will receive $20 per hour for travel time.
  • The Pelicans may secure the services of an alternate in the event that the Mascot is unable to perform their duties, and the Mascot must make the costume available for the organization’s use.
  • The Pelicans will make reasonable efforts to consult with with the Mascot on the artistic portions of their performance as Pierre; however, all performances are subject to the Pelicans direction and control.
  • The Mascot is not expected to perform athletic or acrobatic feats as part of their appearances.
  • This position does not require “office hours” beyond what is required to execute the scope of work noted above. This position includes use of a Pelicans.com email address.
