Job Summary:

The Broadcast Engineer, under the direction of the department’s Chief Engineer, will be responsible for maintenance, support and improvement of broadcast equipment, systems and infrastructures. This person will work with other operations and maintenance staff to ensure that the broadcast video production facilities at Comerica Park, Little Caesars Arena and multiple concert venues operate efficiently and reliably.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Primary focus on Little Caesars Arena control room, including on-site engineering for all home games throughout the Detroit Pistons basketball season.
  • Event day engineering as needed at Little Caesars Arena, including Red Wings games and concerts, as well as Tigers games at Comerica Park.
  • Liaison with network trucks and interconnect room.
  • Manage the implementation and documentation of special projects.
  • Provide guidance on broadcast equipment diagnosis, maintenance, and repair.
  • Resolve equipment malfunction - troubleshoot, diagnose and repair and/or replace broadcast equipment.
  • Create and manage preventative maintenance schedules on all broadcast equipment and technologies.
  • Provide operational support for other departments.
  • Focused support of Daktronics display equipment; professional broadcast production equipment including but not limited to Evertz routers, Sony cameras, Grass Valley cameras, Sony switchers, Grass Valley switchers, Evertz Dreamcatcher, EVS replay, Chyron graphics, Xpression graphics, Ross Tessera control systems, and IPTV systems.
  • Maintain working inventory of all broadcast equipment.
  • Develop technical requirements for live video workflows.
  • Assist in budget planning and state of the art equipment research.
  • Assist with new equipment integration and support network and server technologies including IP routing and switching technology.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in broadcasting roles such as maintenance, operations technician or similar position.
  • Demonstrated ability in component level troubleshooting, large project conception and implementation and customer focused problem solving.
  • In depth technical knowledge of broadcast technologies and production systems, multimedia hardware, software and other broadcast systems.
  • Working knowledge of both digital and analog video/audio systems, RF, field and studio cameras and decks.
  • Knowledge of compliance and regulations applicable to FCC, local, state and federal laws.
  • The ability to work well under pressure and make quick sound decisions.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays and overnights.
  • Must be able to process large amounts of information, analyze this information and make sound decisions sometimes under intense deadline pressure.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be willing to work in Detroit area and travel as needed for special assignments.
  • Must be willing to submit to a background investigation.
  • Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Team player.
  • Has the ability to seek simple solutions to complex problems.
  • Skilled in utilizing internal and external resources to accomplish goals.


Working Conditions:

  • Irregular and extended hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Exposure to high noise level.
  • Frequent visual/auditory attention
  • While performing the duties of this job, the colleague is regularly exposed to a facility environment, outside weather conditions, extreme cold/heat, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places; and fumes or airborne particles.
  • Required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The colleague frequently is required to sit. The colleague is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The colleague must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Requires long periods of time on feet.
