JOB SUMMARY:

The Detroit Tigers are currently seeking a full-time Analyst in the Baseball Operations Department. This role will be responsible for performing analyses and conducting research within Baseball Operations, specifically to advance our capabilities in Hitting Analytics.  This position will report to the Director, Baseball Research & Development.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform advanced quantitative analysis to support Baseball Operations decision-making, including descriptive, predictive and prescriptive statistical modeling, with special focus on hitting data and processes. Monitor, identify and recommend new or emerging techniques, technologies, models, and algorithms that can be included in our production workflow. Collaborate with Performance Science staff to integrate data and perspectives. Complete ad hoc data queries and effectively present analysis using written reports and data visualizations. Assist with the integration of baseball analysis into our proprietary tools and applications. Contribute to baseball decision-making by generating ideas for player acquisition, roster construction and in-game strategies. Other projects as directed by Baseball Operations leadership.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Demonstrated knowledge of baseball-specific data, modern statistical techniques, and sabermetric analysis. Experience working with skeletal and bat-tracking data is highly valued. Relevant work experience with statistical software (R or Python). Experience with these in a cloud computing environment is a plus. Experience with light-scale web deployment software (e.g. Shiny) is a plus. Experience with SQL and relational databases is a plus. Experience working with large data sets preferred, including experience with biomechanical time-series data.   Demonstrated ability to communicate difficult and complex concepts to colleagues possessing a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives, including end-user colleagues throughout baseball operations.   Degree or equivalent experience in statistics, mathematics, computer science, or a related quantitative field. Experience in software development, encompassing requirements identification, system design, coding, testing, and deployment is preferred but not required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office environment. Position is on-site in Detroit, MI. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours required as dictated by the baseball calendar
