Facility Operations/Event Staff: Facility/Venue Management

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs.  These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).  We are currently seeking a Director of Athletics Facilities and Maintenance who will work within the department’s Facilities unit.

Position Overview: 
This position oversees the maintenance and operations of all Athletics buildings and facilities. This involves the management, long-range planning, organization, coordination, oversight and/or performance of all maintenance and management activities and services for all Athletics facilities, including space planning, change-overs/set-ups for events, building automated systems, general maintenance, work order triage and tracking of repair services, move planning and coordination, development of procedures, and policies and communications related to infrastructure and safety.

  • Creates and monitors master building maintenance plans, budgets, and schedules (yearly projects, seasonal maintenance, and game/event preparation).
  • In conjunction with staff, manage the maintenance on a daily basis to the documented plans, provide direction and changes where needed.
  • Performs regular facility and building walk throughs to identify problems and develop solutions, such as allocation of resources or changing project scope. Ensuring a comprehensive maintenance program is in place for all facilities and equipment on behalf of the unit.
  • Maintains facility-wide preventative maintenance program and also administers emergency preparedness for department or unit. Consistently look to improve maintenance plans.
  • Supervises building services to ensure guests, tenets, staff, and student-athletes receive the best possible experience when using our facilities.
  • Oversees Facilities maintenance staff, monitors performance of staff members, and completes annual performance reviews.  Creates work schedules for staff based on maintenance schedule and events.
  • Conducts training, provides on-site supervision and works with staff to provide solutions and assist with facility maintenance.
  • Oversees work order system, assigns tasks to staff and ensures completion of tasks with staff and end user.
  • For facilities that host events, work closely with Event staff on any maintenance concerns on a weekly basis during competitive seasons.
  • Establishes and oversees health and safety standards. Ensuring the facility is compliant with all code, public safety, and permits. Ensures all systems, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection meet University and Campus standards.
  • Serves as one of the departmental liaison to Recreation Sports on issues involving IA and Rec Sports. Serves as the department liaison to Facility Services on issues involving IA facilities.

Required Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles, and practices of event and facility planning, including event design and facility maintenance.
  • Experience in managing a workforce, creating schedules, managing hours and Overtime, assigning tasks, and mobilizing a workforce.
  • Experience in tracking to a specific budget for operational and salary expenses.
  • Thorough knowledge of the campus, its vision, mission, programs, policies, achievements and infrastructure.
  • Skill in effectively meeting budget and time constraints.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills in the English language, including active listening, flexibility, critical thinking, and the ability to multi-task and ensure effective time management.
  • Solid decision making and reasoning skills, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems and conduct operations analysis and quality control analysis.
  • Solid and effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills to work successfully with clients and internal staff members to produce high quality events and well managed facilities that meet client needs.
  • Highly developed judgment, decision-making and problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills, including skill in determining those issues/problems that need to be brought to management's attention.
  • Previous event and facility management experience in college athletics.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the Pacific-12 Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
  • Experience working at a large university (particularly in Division 1) with a large quantity of sports and highly-rated, world-class facilities.
