The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs.  These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).  We are currently seeking an Associate Athletics Director who will oversee the department’s Cameron Institute for Student-Athlete Development.

Description of Position:  
The Cameron Institute aspires to foster an environment in which each student-athlete can reach his or her full potential. This position is responsible for creating and managing the Cameron Institute, which is to be the national model of Student-Athlete Development units, aimed at preparing student-athletes for their lives after college. The Cameron Institute will be founded on three critical pillars of development for our student-athletes: leadership and personal development, career development, and community engagement.

The Associate Athletic Director, Student-Athlete Development reports into the Athletic Director and is a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Executive Team. This position exists to develop, promote, and support the operational and strategic aspects of UC Berkeley’s intercollegiate student-athlete programs. This position will be involved in budget administration, resource planning and scheduling, and management oversight for Intercollegiate Athletics’ Cameron Institute for Student-Athlete Development.

  • Design, implement, and evaluate student-athlete development programs and curriculum based on the 3 pillars of the Cameron Institute – leadership and personal development, career development, and community engagement.
  • Ensure all programming is meeting the needs of Athletics teams and student-athletes.
  • Oversee a full suite of professional development and networking program designed to match student-athletes with outstanding organizations in the Bay Area and beyond.
  • Partner with the Cal Athletics Fund in fundraising efforts to financially support various programs and initiatives in support of the Cameron Institute for the enrichment of the student-athlete experience.
  • Responsible for administering the budget for managed function for the Cameron Institute and allocating money between the various sub-units of the Institute.
  • Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
  • Work with other units within the Department (i.e. Sports Medicine, Compliance) and across Campus (e.g. ASC, Student-Affairs, and Career Services) on a variety of programming, including workshops and seminars, to promote the holistic development of student-athletes (i.e. mental health, leadership skills, etc.).
  • Provide guidance and leadership to the Athletics Department and Athletics Director in the area of student-athlete development.

Required Qualifications:   
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.
  • Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
  • Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Ability in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership, and intercultural competence.
  • Knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Client services oriented, has good listening, critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Position requires exceptional political sensitivity and interpersonal skills and ability to enable the incumbent to work effectively across and outside the organization at all levels in a collaborative manner.
  • Strong leadership skills, and ability to develop consensus in sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Ability to inspire, organize and direct the activities of subordinate managers, professionals and peers within the organization.
  • Knowledge of University policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. MBA desirable.
  • 5+ years of experience in running a Student Affairs/Student Life department.
  • Previous experience at a Division 1 Power 5 Conference institution
  • Professional certification
