Facility Operations/Event Staff: Grounds Crew/Turf Management
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs.  These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).  We are currently seeking two Assistant Directors of Athletics Grounds who will work within the department’s Facilities unit.

Description of Position:  
These positions oversee the maintenance and operations of natural grass fields and synthetic fields for Intercollegiate Athletics. The positions also manage the Hellman & Channing tennis complexes, Edwards Track and some landscaping at Athletics venues.   The employees will work with coaches, staff, and the Grounds crew on a daily basis to provide support to intercollegiate athletic teams and programs.  The position also involves planning, organizing, and coordinating with campus on activities supporting exterior landscaping, including gardening, planting, landscape and grounds maintenance, erosion, pest management, and exterior fire control projects.

  • Closely oversees day-to-day activities of landscape/groundskeeping employees. Provides on-site supervision and works with staff to provide solutions and assist with field maintenance.
  • Assist with the organization and scheduling of routine landscape/groundskeeping operations. 
  • Creates field schedules highlighting daily maintenance times and activities, yearly projects, and game-day timelines and activities for field prep. 
  • Assists with creation, updating, and following detailed field maintenance plans that highlight yearly projects, seasonal maintenance, game preparation, field lining, and field testing.
  • Trains and supervises the landscape/groundskeeping staff to maintain an orderly, safe, and efficient grounds operation. 
  • Assist with creating work schedules for staff based on maintenance schedule and events.
  • Checks in with coaches frequently on condition of facilities. Incorporates feedback into daily planning.
  • Monitor inventory on a facility, commodity or project basis and communicate needs to Supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Contact vendors, receive quotes, handle logistical planning and ensure contracted projects are completed correctly.
  • Ensures safety, hazardous materials and landscape/groundskeeping policies and procedures are adhered to.
Required Qualifications:   
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles, and practices of event and facility planning, including facility maintenance.
  • Knowledge of sports turf – both natural and synthetic –its specifications, maintenance guidelines, and equipment needed.
  • Knowledge in the care and use of power equipment and other landscape/groundskeeping tools.
  • Knowledge and experience managing and enforcing contracts for field and court work such as aeration, slit seeding, top dressing and tennis court resurfacing.
  • Knowledge and experience with field painting and logo programs including design, stencils, colors, use of paint sprayers and related equipment.  
  • Experience in managing a workforce, creating schedules, managing hours and overtime, assigning tasks, and mobilizing a workforce. 
  • Experience in tracking to a specific budget for operational and salary expenses
  • Thorough knowledge of the campus, its vision, mission, programs, policies, achievements and infrastructure.
  • Skill in effectively meeting budget and time constraints.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills in the English language, including active listening, flexibility, critical thinking, and the ability to multi-task and ensure effective time management.
  • Solid decision making and reasoning skills, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems and conduct operations analysis and quality control analysis.
  • Solid and effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills to work successfully with clients and internal staff members to produce high quality events and well managed facilities that meet client needs.
  • Highly developed judgment, decision-making and problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills, including skill in determining those issues/problems that need to be brought to management's attention.
  • Previous facility management experience in college athletics.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the Pacific-12 Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
  • Experience working at a large university (particularly in Division 1) with a large quantity of sports and highly-rated, world-class facilities.
