About the Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons are a professional American football club and member of the National Football League (NFL).  The team’s headquarters and practice facility are located on a 50-acre site in Flowery Branch, Georgia.  The Falcons’ NFL expansion franchise was awarded in 1965 and acquired by current owner Arthur Blank, co-founder of Home Depot, in 2002.  Under Blank’s leadership, the Falcons have become one of the League’s premier teams on and off the field.

The Atlanta Falcons Beat Writer is responsible for creating daily, football-specific editorial and packaged content for Falcons digital, including the team’s official website and social channels.


This high-profile, fast-paced, and challenging opportunity requires organizational skills to help create a clear football story calendar. The Atlanta Falcons Beat Writer must be efficient writing clean, engaging copy under heavy deadline pressure. This person must pride themselves in delivering thorough coverage of the team, including every key storyline, to ensure that AtlantaFalcons.com is a one-stop destination for the storylines fans are interested in. Our beat writer must also showcase a high degree of interest in football to provide in-depth analysis and to help establish credibility with our avid fans, yet identify when a bigger storyline emerges from a press conference that will draw more interest from a larger audience.


The Atlanta Falcons Beat Writer must be motivated by audience interests and stay on top of things that drive content performance and fan engagement. This person must have a strong interest in analytics and help play a critical role in getting more people to visit AtlantaFalcons.com more often, and they must be able write in a creative, engaging way when the story calls for it - including search engine friendly headlines.


Roles and Responsibilities
  • Takes great pride in that every key storyline is covered on AtlantaFalcons.com, and first when possible
  • Helps create and manage a detailed editorial calendar for Falcons digital properties  
  • Aids in the growth of the Falcons editorial vision, voice, and strategy to help create more daily visitors and followers
  • Writes unique, compelling short- and long-form stories / editorials covering the Falcons, both on and off the field. Focus will be on covering press conferences, practices, games, individual players and coaching staff.
  • Maintains SEO best practices in creating content - written, video, or audio
  • Writes factual news reports with engaging storylines and headlines
  • Must build trust, strong relationships with players, coaches and football staff to find stories that others miss
  • Helps to shape and define a youthful Falcons football voice and perspective
  • Demonstrates aggressive growth in KPI metrics
  • Publishes articles, photos, and videos to the site’s CMS  
  • Covers key community relations storylines and activations
  • Links site metrics to overall communications and brand metrics for evaluation of strategy versus execution

Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in journalism, media, editorial newsroom, or related field
  • Strong news judgement and editorial skills, including proven success driving metrics and engagement within digital / social media platforms
  • Ability to meet aggressive editorial deadlines
  • Experience working on multiple platforms, including podcasts and video, is preferred
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, InDesign, etc. Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS is helpful. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high-paced, demanding professional setting
  • Experience with digital / web and social publishing tools. Knowledge of NFL CMS platform preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects and teams 
  • Candidates selected to interview must submit a versatile clips package (4-6 stories) demonstrating ability to ability to write breaking news, game coverage/analysis on deadline, feature profiles and outside-the-box stories
  • Some travel required
