The Role:
The Frederick Flying Cows professional basketball team offers a unique opportunity to work in professional sports and be part of an organization from the ground up! As a Statistician, you will play an integral role in the team’s success by capturing, recording, and analyzing game data to support player development, coaching strategy, and organizational decision-making. You will have the chance to work directly with the coaching staff, game operations, and league personnel during live games and team events.
The ideal candidate will be reliable, detail-oriented, and passionate about both sports and analytics. We strongly prefer candidates who are either from or currently living in the Frederick area.
Statisticians are required to work all Frederick Flying Cows home games and other designated team events, as directed by the General Manager or Head Coach.
This is a paid, part-time position. Candidates must be willing to work evenings and weekends during the season and demonstrate a high level of professionalism and accuracy in their work.
THIS IS AN IN-PERSON OPPORTUNITY! Candidates must already reside in the Frederick area and be willing to commute daily or fully relocate to the area.
Who are the Flying Cows?
The Frederick Flying Cows are a new professional basketball organization that play in the USBL. The league regular season runs twenty-four (24) games long from March – May, with 12 home and 12 away games. Playoffs are in June. The league is positioning itself as an alternative option for players who might be playing in professional leagues overseas and are hoping to build their careers towards playing against the highest possible competition. The USBL play is high quality – just a notch below the level of the NBA G-league. Thus far, the Flying Cows have built a successful on-court product as well as a one-of-a-kind brand off the court.
What you can expect…
We are a small, dedicated team, meaning our staff work cross-functionally and contribute to multiple areas of the organization. As the team’s Statistician, you will be responsible for collecting, verifying, and analyzing basketball statistics for games, players, and team performance throughout the season. You will collaborate closely with the coaching staff and league officials to ensure the accurate and timely reporting of all statistical data.
Key Responsibilities:
- Record and input live game statistics in accordance with USBL standards and procedures.
- Maintain detailed box scores, player efficiency data, and advanced statistics during and after each game.
- Provide accurate game summaries and statistical reports for team, league, and media use.
- Analyze player and team performance metrics to support coaching and scouting efforts.
- Assist the coaching staff with the preparation of data-driven reports, trend analyses, and scouting information.
- Communicate with league statisticians to ensure consistency and accuracy in data submission.
- Manage and maintain statistical databases throughout the season.
- Support additional team operations as needed, including video coordination and analytics integration.
Basic Expectations & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (or pursuing one) in statistics, sports management, data science, analytics, or related field.
- Must be located in the Frederick, MD area.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy under pressure.
- Knowledge of basketball rules, scoring, and terminology required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and statistical software preferred.
- Experience with sports data platforms or stat-tracking software is a plus.
- Available evenings and weekends for all home games and select team events.
- Ability to work collaboratively with coaches, players, and staff in a professional setting.
