Want to build a career in sports? Get hands-on experience telling the stories behind some of Houston’s biggest sporting events and community initiatives. 

The Harris County–Houston Sports Authority is seeking a curious, motivated student who wants real-world experience in sports communications, public relations, media relations, and storytelling. HCHSA helps bring major sporting events to Houston and Harris County, giving our interns the opportunity to work across different sports, events, venues, and community initiatives. 

As a Communications Intern, you’ll work directly with the HCHSA Communications Team help tell the story of HCHSA and Houston’s sports community. From drafting press materials and researching story opportunities to supporting press conferences and media operations at events, you'll contribute to real communications efforts that help generate awareness, shape messaging, and showcase Houston as a premier sports destination. 
You’ll have the opportunity to attend events, contribute ideas, build your portfolio, and develop your skills in public relations, writing, media relations, and event communications, all within a fast-paced, collaborative environment.  

WHAT YOU’LL DO: 
  • Work alongside the Communications Team to support public relations, media relations, and organizational communications efforts 
  • Assist with drafting and editing press releases, media advisories, talking points, briefing materials, event pitches, and other written materials 
  • Support press conferences, media availabilities, announcements, and other communications-related events 
  • Assist with media credentialing and on-site media operations for sporting events and other HCHSA activations 
  • Monitor local, regional, and national media coverage and identify relevant sports industry news, trends, and potential storylines 
  • Compile media coverage and help prepare media recaps and reports 
  • Research reporters, outlets, story angles, events, industry topics, and other information to support communications initiatives 
  • Help develop and maintain media lists and contact databases 
  • Proofread communications materials for grammar, accuracy, consistency, and brand alignment 
  • Assist with writing and editing website content, newsletters, advertorials, presentations, and other communications materials as needed 
  • Collaborate with marketing and social media team members to support integrated campaigns and ensure consistent messaging across platforms 
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions for campaigns, story ideas, and other opportunities to increase awareness for HCHSA and its work 
  • Bring ideas to the table, be open to feedback, and apply coaching from team members to grow professionally 

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR: 
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Sports Management, or a related field 
  • Passion for sports and an interest in public relations, storytelling, and the sports industry 
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and comfort interacting professionally with different audiences 
  • Curiosity about news, current events, sports media, and how stories are developed and covered 
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy 
  • Ability to conduct research, identify relevant information, and summarize key findings 
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines 
  • Familiarity with traditional news media, digital media and current sports industry trends 
  • Team player with the ability to collaborate across multiple projects 
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple assignments and content in various stages of development

  • Available to work Monday through Friday, with some weekends and evenings required based on event calendar.

COMPENSATION 
This is an unpaid internship offered for academic credit only. Interns are not eligible for HCHSA employee benefits.
