Job Summary
The position of Director, Hockey Operations & Player Safety includes overseeing the AHL Player Safety Department, in addition to various hockey operations responsibilities. This position will report to the Vice President, Hockey Operations.
Job Responsibilities/General Functions
Player Safety
- Collect necessary videos and reports from member clubs and on-ice officials.
- Clip necessary video via the Spiideo review system.
- Distribute appropriate League notices to member clubs.
- Write corresponding suspension reports to be distributed for player education and development.
- Manage correspondence with the AHL Player Safety Committee to ensure a timely review process.
- Responsible for daily, weekly, monthly, and season long player safety reporting.
- Work with the AHL VP, Communications on discipline press releases.
- Produce new suspension videos and maintain AHL suspension video drive as suspensions occur.
- Daily review of AHL game sheets for accuracy and player safety reporting.
Officiating
- Create officiating assignments in collaboration with the VP, Hockey Operations on an ongoing basis throughout the preseason, regular season, and playoffs.
- Communicate with partner leagues on staffing, assignments, and training camps.
- Travel to and supervise approximately 40 AHL hockey games per playing season.
- Draft weekly officiating notes to be distributed to all AHL on-ice officials, AHL supervisors and NHL Officiating Managers for coaching and development.
- Plan and execute yearly officiating training camps in collaboration with other members of the AHL Hockey Operations Department.
General Hockey Operations Duties
- Distribute league memorandums and league directives as needed.
- Distribute weekly AHL player equipment exemptions and the AHL/NHL approved equipment list as required.
- Manage the All-star player nomination, voting, and selection process with member clubs.
- Oversee the daily operation of the AHL Spiideo video review system including ensuring proper operation, troubleshooting with member clubs, and on-ice officials reporting.
- Assist in various hockey operation duties as required.
Preferred Education
Bachelor’s degree preferred
Required Work Experience
Minimum three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in hockey operations, player safety, or officiating.
Job Specific Knowledge/Skills/Certifications
- Computer savvy and proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational/project management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize workload.
- Ability to work flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to deliver high-quality work and execute under pressure and deadlines.
Other Job-Related Requirements
Availability for traditional and non-traditional working hours – nights, weekends, and holidays. Generally reachable at all times, including east and west coast working hours and during AHL games.
