Position Overview

The Seasonal Assistant, Community Relations (Barracuda & Sharks Ice) provides temporary, hands-on support for community initiatives related to the San Jose Barracuda (AHL affiliate) and Sharks Ice facilities. Reporting to the Manager, Community Relations, this role assists with event preparation, execution, and follow-up to ensure seamless delivery of community programs. This position plays a key role in supporting Barracuda player and coach appearances, fan engagement events, and grassroots initiatives, helping to expand the organization’s impact on youth, families, and the broader community.
 
This role is seasonal and temporary, running during the designated hockey season, with potential evening and weekend work required to support game-day activations and community events.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Event & Program Support
    • Assist with the execution of community events and programs involving the San Jose Barracuda and Sharks Ice, including cause-related activations, public skating programs, and special theme nights.
    • Provide on-site support at events, engaging with participants, assisting with logistics, and ensuring an inclusive, welcoming experience.
    • Support the coordination of Barracuda player and coach appearances, including communicating event details, providing logistical support, and assisting with crowd management.
    • Help facilitate grassroots initiatives, ensuring proper execution and alignment with community outreach goals.
    • General support of Barracuda in-kind donation process
  • Logistics & Administration
    • Prepare event materials, equipment, and supplies, ensuring proper transport and setup for community activations.
    • Maintain organized records of participant data, event attendance, and feedback to support program evaluation and continuous improvement.
    • Assist with basic administrative tasks, such as scheduling, correspondence, and data entry, as needed.
  • Collaboration & Communication
    • Serve as liaison between AHL/Sharks Ice staff and Sharks Community Impact to share knowledge on upcoming events, priorities, and areas for collaboration
    • Work closely with the Manager, Community Relations and internal teams (e.g., Marketing, Public Relations, Corporate Partnerships) to understand event objectives and ensure seamless execution.
    • Communicate event updates, challenges, and successes promptly to the Manager, Community Relations, offering suggestions for program enhancements when applicable.
    • Support efforts to highlight Barracuda and Sharks Ice community involvement by capturing photos, testimonials, and stories, sharing them with the Coordinator, Community Impact Communications for promotional use.
    • Assist in game-day activations, including Barracuda community nights, player programs, and fan experiences.
    • Assist with Community Impact (Community Relations + Sharks Foundation) initiatives as needed.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma required.
  • Prior experience volunteering or working in event coordination, community outreach, fan engagement, youth sports or related experience is required.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills, comfortable engaging with diverse participants, including children, families, and volunteers.
  • A positive, team-oriented attitude with a willingness to learn and take initiative.
  • Professionalism around professional hockey players and VIPs
  • Basic familiarity with digital tools and social media platforms to support community engagement efforts.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and game days, as required.
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in Sports Management, Nonprofit Management, Communications, Marketing, or a related field preferred.
  • Passion for hockey, sports, and community engagement.
  • Knowledge of the Bay Area community landscape is a plus.
  • Ability to travel to various events at schools, Sharks Ice facilities, and Barracuda community activations on a regular basis.
 
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand and ice skate for extended periods of time
  • Communicate with a variety of individuals
  • Ability to bend at the waist, reach overhead and lift up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation
  • Ability to work occasional extended hours including nights, weekends, holidays (all with advance notice)
  • Ability to work in a cold environment for extended periods
