Position Overview

Sharks Sports and Entertainment is seeking a passionate, determined individual to create exceptional and unique entertainment experiences for our fans, as a member of Team Teal and as the Sharks “NHL Mascot of the Year”. This isn’t your average “job in sports”, this is an opportunity to be part of a team of creative and driven individuals, tasked with pioneering the future of sports and entertainment. 

In this highly visible and fan-facing role, the Brand Events Specialist is responsible for efforts to drive revenue and increase brand awareness for the Sharks Sports and Entertainment, all while entertaining our fans, customers and audiences. In this role, the Specialist will be a key part in all aspects the Sharks brand, making memories, developing new fans, impacting the community, and using their talents working with all functional groups within Sharks Sports and Entertainment.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • MASCOT
    • Perform as the San Jose Sharks mascot at all home games, appearances and team event
    • Responsible for costume upkeep, prop and costume creation. Keep an accurate inventory of all props, costumes, mascot merchandise, etc., and work with the organization to place orders for needed items  
    • Assist Event Presentation in creation, implementation, and execution of in game programming, entertainment and activations
    • Engage with fans of all ages through skits, dances, comedic moments, and spontaneous interactions
    • Co-manage the sourcing and scheduling of mascot appearances 
    • Scheduling mascot in-game fan visits 
    • Creation of new programs and activations, as well as reimagining existing programs, allowing for new revenue sources and to reach revenue goals
    • Provide services and/or appearances for inter-departmental mascot needs within Sharks Sports and Entertainment. 
    • Assist with AHL mascot program 
    • Ideate and implement creative and innovative elements, including, but not limited to, in-arena video content, in-game contests and entertainment, sponsor opportunities, on-ice and in-arena activations and mascot skits. 
    • Maintain, clean, fuel and arrange service for company supplied appearance vehicle upkeep. 
    • Assist with content for SJ Sharkie Social Media accounts by providing images / videos / concepts for Social team to post
    • Update as needed and uphold Sharkie’s brand guidelines 
    • Take direction for timing, cues, and choreography

  • BRAND / COMMUNITY PROGRAMS 
    • Represent the team at community events, sponsor activations, schools, and charity events, etc.
    • Work closely with Corporate Partnerships and Community Relations to fulfill sponsor appearance obligations
    • Serve as a positive, family-friendly ambassador for the brand both in and out of costume
    • Assist Marketing Manager with: Implementing various Community programs (including but not limited to Stick to Fitness, Kids Club, Crib Club, etc.). 
    • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to make and implement decisions after evaluating various courses of action 
    • Appear at organizational internal events (staff rallies, holiday parties, corporate meetings, etc.).
    • Support internal marketing, content, and employee engagement initiatives
    • Participate in brand / program video / photo shoots, content creation, etc.
    • Other duties as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 4+ years of previous semi‐pro or professional mascot experience is mandatory. College mascot experience is a plus. 
  • Ability to improvise and create spontaneous entertaining performances
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to make and implement decisions after evaluating various courses of action 
  • Must be comfortable performing solo and in front of large crowds.

  • Ability to represent multiple functional groups throughout the organization and interacting with the fan base (revenue and brand, sales, event presentation, community, PR, etc.). 
  • Proficient with basic computer systems, including Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and SAP systems for routine tasks such as communication, scheduling, and event coordination.

  • Ability to utilize a computer for extended periods of time, communicate via phone and email with a variety of individuals

Physical Requirements

  • Availability to work all home games and up to 300 other events per year to serve as mascot or mascot’s escort. Punctuality is mandatory and availability to work irregular hours, nights, weekends and/or holidays 
  • Due to costume sizing, candidate must be at least 5 feet 7 inches and no more than 6 feet 2 inches and weigh between 165 lbs. and 225 lbs. 
  • High level of athletic ability, stamina, and physical coordination (dancing, running, skating, etc., if applicable).
  • Ability to perform in a costume for extended periods in various indoor and outdoor venues in a variety of climates, often with restricted vision.
  • Must be high energy and able to traverse arena, including up and down stairs, and able to move objects weighing up to 100 pounds with or without accommodation
  • Ability to sit, stand and utilize a computer for extended periods of time
  • Communicate via phone and email with a variety of individuals
  • Ability to bend at the waist and reach overhead with or without accommodation
  • Physically navigate stairs and catwalks at SSE facilities during normal work hours and events with or without accommodation
  • May be required to travel to other company locations  
  • May be required to attend conference, events, and training sessions within Bay Area or in- or out-of-state locations.
