Position: Data Engineer, Hockey Operations [Remote]
Department: Hockey Operations
Reports To: Director, Research & Development

We believe that Winning Matters, our Fans come first, with risk comes reward, great teams can achieve unimaginable results, honoring the Pacific Northwest is our duty and driving the business is our responsibility.
Position Summary
The Data Engineer will be part of the Hockey Operations Research & Development team, responsible for building and maintaining the data infrastructure that powers player evaluation, trade analysis, draft preparation, and real-time decision making across the organization.
This is a small, high-ownership team where you’ll work closely with analysts, developers, and hockey operations staff who depend on the systems you build. You’ll design & implement pipelines, optimize data storage & retrieval, and help ship reliable, performant infrastructure that scouts and coaches actually use.
In a typical week, you might be debugging a pipeline that ingests tracking data, meeting with a scout or analyst to understand a new report they would like created, and working with an analyst on feature engineering for a new model. The systems you build will directly shape how we evaluate players, prepare for games, and make decisions that end up on the ice.
Philosophy
We believe good engineering in this role means:
- Building tools that help hockey operations staff make better decisions, faster
- Ability to take loosely defined data requirements and deliver practical solutions
- Choosing simple, reliable solutions over clever ones
- Owning outcomes from problem through delivery, including incorporating user feedback
- Shipping iteratively and learning from how the data is actually used
- Noticing data quality or reliability issues early and addressing them proactively
- Eagerness to learn the domain, grow as an engineer, and be open to mentorship
You do not need to be a hockey expert on day one, but you should be genuinely curious about the domain.
Must-Haves
- 1+ year of data or analytics engineering experience in a production environment
- Ability to independently design and maintain data pipelines in Python
- Experience with ETL development, data modeling, and data warehousing
- Experience with PostgreSQL or other relational databases at scale
- Comfort working directly with non-technical users and translating their feedback into product decisions
- Clear written communication and the ability to work with high autonomy
Good-to-Haves
- Experience with AWS or a similar cloud ecosystem
- Experience with a modern data stack: cloud warehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift), orchestration (Airflow/dbt) and pipeline tooling.
- Experience working with high-frequency spatial or event-stream data (e.g. NHL puck and player tracking, optical tracking systems, or similar)
- Passion for hockey or sports
Key Considerations
- This is a small team with limited layers between identifying a problem and owning it
- Priorities shift with the hockey calendar — draft, trade deadline, free agency, and training camp all drive the roadmap
- Data reliability is critical because hockey operations staff depend on accurate, timely information for real decisions
- Requirements are not always fully defined. Comfort with ambiguity is essential
