The Professional Women’s Hockey League (“PWHL”) is seeking an experienced and passionate individual for the role of Communications Coordinator. This position reports to the VP, Communications and External Affairs and will play a key role in supporting the PWHL’s growing communications department, ensuring consistent execution, organization, and professionalism across media relations, publicity, and league events.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support league and team storytelling through coordinated publicity efforts, tracking speaking opportunities, and awards submissions to increase visibility for the PWHL and its leadership
- Proactively cultivate relationships with diverse local media outlets, continually seeking innovative opportunities for coverage across print, digital, radio, and television platforms to expand audience reach and elevate brand visibility
- Leverage relationships to grow media contact list
- Assist in drafting and editing press materials, media advisories, talking points, bios, and event recaps in alignment with PWHL brand standards and Associate Press/Canadian Press style
- Oversee the PWHL’s media-facing social media accounts, ensuring consistent, timely, and accurate updates
- Manage the daily flow of media requests, including photo servicing, general inbox responses, and information fulfillment, ensuring timely and professional communication with journalists and media partners
- Produce and distribute game notes and related materials remotely for certain games, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with PWHL standards across the full game coverage schedule
- Manage distribution lists, department calendars, and key deadlines to support overall efficiency and planning
- Support press operations both virtually and on-site at PWHL games or events, including seating charts, credentialing, and press conference logistics
- Track, organize, and distribute media coverage summaries, providing insights and key learnings to internal stakeholders
- Contribute to the development of efficient tools and workflows that enhance organization, reporting, and communication within the department as the PWHL continues to grow
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of 1-2 years working in sports media relations, public relations, communications, journalism, or related professional experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Media, Sports Management, or another related degree – Required
- Experience in the sports and entertainment industry – Preferred
- Must be proficient with computers and MS Office programs
- Ability to travel as needed for games and events
SKILLS, ABILITIES & OTHER ATTRIBUTES:
- Demonstrated knowledge of hockey, with a strong understanding of the game’s structure, terminology, and culture to effectively support media relations needs and storytelling
- Knowledge of public and media relations, spanning targeted pitching, media list development, press operations (e.g., pressers, scrums), embargo/exclusive management
- Innate creativity and a keen eye for storytelling, coupled with adept research skills and a penchant for generating original and innovative ideas
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities to promote the sharing of information inter-departmentally
- Inherent drive for continuous learning and advancement, coupled with a proactive approach to enhancing departmental processes and staying abreast of industry trends and best practices
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, ensuring the timely achievement of goals and objectives
- Flexibility to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, as necessitated by event schedules and project deadlines, exhibiting a commitment to meeting organizational needs, even on short notice

COMPENSATION:
Annual Salary: The annual salary for this role is $58,000 to $60,000 USD DOE.
Position includes participation in all welfare, perquisites, fringe benefit, insurance, retirement and other benefit plans, practices, policies and programs, made available by the league as may be in effect from time to time.
