This is a part-time, seasonal position located in Piney Orchard Ice Arena in Odenton, MD.
Job Description
The Maryland Black Bears are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic individual to perform as our team mascot, Bruno. You will act as a brand ambassador, appearing as Bruno at our Black Bears’ home games and occasional community appearances on request. The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about sports with a “team first mentality”, has fun engaging with a crowd of all ages, and takes pride in contributing to a positive fan experience and community.
Job Responsibilities
- Act as the primary mascot performer for the Maryland Black Bears, attending all home games, including preseason, regular season, and post season, as well as any other related events as requested
- Learn the mannerisms, personality, and responsibilities of Bruno (Black Bears mascot)
- Follow a game day script, making sure to be in place for each activity or promotion involving Bruno, while also being able to adjust on the fly if needed
- Communicate with fans and perform in a non-verbal capacity
- Engage with the Black Bears’ fans and crowd, keeping them invested and involved in the games and the team’s success
- Read the audience and adjust performance to improve or match atmosphere during the course of each game
- Participate in social media and marketing content as Bruno (as needed)
- Encourage community growth and involvement with the team and organization
Minimum Qualifications
- At least 18 years old
- Ability to attend specifically scheduled home games as well as any pre-game meetings (includes nights, weekends, and holidays)
- Candidates should be between 5’7”-6’3” tall
- In good physical condition, to run around and participate in promotional activities while wearing a full-body mascot costume
- Must be able to walk up and down stairs, run, dance, otherwise move about the arena quickly. Must be able to walk on the ice surface.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs
- Must have reliable transportation
- Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment
- Must be an outgoing individual with high-energy
- Passionate about creating positive fan experiences
- Must pass a criminal background check
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior mascot experience preferred
- Working knowledge of the rules and culture of hockey
- Ability to ice skate
About Us
The Maryland Black Bears are a Tier 2 Junior Hockey Team based in Odenton, MD. Our players, aged 16-21, are amateur players from the United States and Canada who seek to increase their skills and maturity to play next at the NCAA Collegiate D1 level. The team competes in the North American Hockey League (NAHL). We host 9 teams in our division over 14 home game weekends (28 games) from September through April.
