Lead Custodian
Lead Custodian - $30.60 per hour. Wage provisions and conditions are part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Local 70 and the Saint Paul Arena Company.
Position Summary: The Lead Custodian is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, maintenance, and operational readiness of the RiverCentre, Roy Wilkins Auditorium and Grand Casino Arena. This position supports event operations by leading custodial functions, event setups and teardown, and maintaining facility standards in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The Lead Custodian provides leadership and guidance to custodial staff ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Perform and lead a crew in general custodial duties and building maintenance.
- Conduct pre-shift meetings with the crew to communicate the day’s objectives.
- Lead a crew in completing daily cleaning tasks.
- Lead a crew in cleaning offices and public spaces.
- Lead a crew in setting up and tearing down event space as defined in an Event Order.
- Maintain accurate time reports on work performed and sign employees in and out for payroll purposes.
- Measure and mark event spaces for equipment based on diagrams provided in event orders.
- Respond to cleaning and maintenance calls during events.
- Operate and train staff to operate cleaning equipment (riding sweepers/scrubbers, walk behind sweepers and scrubbers, escalator and carpet cleaning equipment, etc.).
- Operate a forklift, Bobcat, scissor lifts (aerial lifts), and other motorized equipment.
- Assist with detailed cleaning projects, including high dusting and floor waxing.
- Work in a team-oriented environment with other full-time, casual labor, and temporary staff.
- Perform tasks to ensure our campus is in top condition for day-to-day operations.
- Clean carpets with vacuums and carpet-cleaning equipment.
- Wash windows and doors, empty trash, and operate compactors.
- Separate all waste (compost, comingle, mixed paper, construction waste, and trash) and empty it into the corresponding receptacle.
- Assist in outside maintenance (shovel snow, pull weeds, pressure wash sidewalks, etc.).
- Assist in unloading and moving freight.
- Communicate, educate, and train all other departmental staff on the building’s sustainability policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
Formal Education & Certification:
- High School Diploma or equivalent certification preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Membership in I.U.O.E. Local 70 or willing to become a member within 30 days of hire.
- Bilingual Spanish/English proficiency strongly preferred.
Knowledge & Experience:
- Knowledge of general facility cleaning needs and procedures.
- Knowledge of general building maintenance.
- Knowledge of tools, materials, and supplies commonly used in building cleaning and maintenance.
- Experience in facilities operations in a convention center/hotel environment.
- Experience in leading a diverse work group.
- Experience operating cleaning equipment, including vacuums, riding scrubbers, and sweepers.
- Experience operating mechanical maintenance equipment (sweepers/buffers/scrubbers).
- Experience operating (or a willingness to learn) forklifts, scissor lifts, and Bobcats.

- Able to coordinate and indirectly supervise large teams, with experience overseeing up to 100 staff members during peak operations.
Work Conditions:
- Work hours will be based on the facility’s event schedule. General work hours will be Thursday through Monday during 2nd Shift.
- Physical requirements include sitting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, lifting, grasping, etc. for the entirety of the shift.
- Lifting requirements include being able to lift 50 pounds.
- Work outdoors as needed year-round.
