Position Summary: The Assistant Athletic Trainer provides comprehensive medical care, injury prevention, and rehabilitation services to ensure athletes remain healthy, safe, and able to perform at their highest level. They evaluate and treat injuries, implement recovery and prevention programs, and coordinate closely with coaches and medical staff while supporting daily team operations, travel, and game coverage. This role is essential because it directly impacts player availability, long-term health, and overall team performance in a demanding professional hockey environment.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Provide comprehensive medical care, injury prevention, and rehabilitation services to players.
    • Evaluate and assess injuries during practices and games.
    • Provide immediate care, including taping, bracing, wound care, and concussion management.
    • Assist in developing and implementing rehabilitation programs for injured athletes.
    • Monitor recovery progress and modify treatment plans as needed.
    • Design and carry out injury prevention programs.
    • Apply preventative taping and ensure proper use of protective equipment.
    • Educate players on hydration, nutrition, and recovery strategies.
    • Manage and treat common hockey-related injuries, including orthopedic and laceration care.
  • Support team operations, medical coordination, and daily logistics in a professional hockey environment.
    • Provide on-site medical coverage for all practices and games, including bench support.
    • Travel with the team and prepare medical setups in home and visiting facilities.
    • Maintain accurate medical records and injury documentation.
    • Communicate player health status with coaches, the head athletic trainer, and medical staff.
    • Coordinate care with team physicians, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers.
    • Manage inventory, packing, and transport of medical supplies and equipment.
    • Assist with emergency action planning and ensure compliance with league policies.
    • Collaborate with strength and conditioning staff on return-to-play protocols.
    • Support overall team readiness in a fast-paced, high-performance environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

Formal Education & Certification:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training, or equivalent experience.
  • Certification by the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer.
  • Current state licensure (or eligibility to obtain licensure in the team’s state).
  • CPR/AED certification for healthcare providers.

 

Knowledge & Experience:

  • At least one to three years of experience in collegiate or professional athletics (hockey strongly preferred).
  • Experience with high-contact sports and acute injury management.
  • Familiarity with concussion protocols and return-to-play procedures.
  • Experience in therapies such as dry needling, manual therapies, cupping, Active Release Technique trainings, orthopedic extender certification, etc. preferred.

Work Conditions:

  • Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays as needed for games and events. 
  • Physical requirements include sitting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, lifting, grasping, etc. 
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
