WHAT WE EXPECT OF YOU
SUMMARY
The National Hockey League (NHL) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled attorney to join its Legal Department as Counsel on the Technology and Data team. This role will focus on advising on legal issues related to technology, data, and artificial intelligence (AI), and will support the League’s innovation and digital transformation initiatives. The ideal candidate will have experience negotiating and drafting technology-related agreements, a strong understanding of emerging technologies, and a passion for the intersection of law, sports, and innovation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contract Negotiation & Drafting
Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of technology-related agreements, including SaaS, licensing, cloud services, software and application development, data sharing, and vendor agreements - Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with internal stakeholders including IT, Fan Engagement, Marketing, Digital Media, and Business Development teams to support technology initiatives and legal alignment - Policy Development
Assist in developing internal policies and best practices related to technology use, AI deployment, risk management and data management - AI & Emerging Technologies
Advise on the legal implications of AI and machine learning technologies used across the League, including compliance with evolving laws and ethical considerations - Data Privacy & Security
Provide counsel on data governance, privacy, and cybersecurity matters, including compliance with applicable laws such as GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other global data protection and cybersecurity regulations - Risk Management
Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with the League’s use of technology and data, and support incident response efforts when necessary - Additional Responsibilities
Provide oversight, strategy and direction to outside counsel
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge Areas/Experience
Required
- At least 10 years of transactional experience focused in technology, AI, media and/or data
- Demonstrated superior legal drafting, contract negotiating, communication (written and oral), and problem-solving skills
- Ability to exercise good judgment in identifying critical legal issues and evaluating and weighing legal risks
- Ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple assignments and deadlines
- A positive, team-oriented and collaborative attitude
Preferred
- Law firm experience preferred
- Familiarity with sports, media, or entertainment industries is a plus
Education/Certifications
- JD from an accredited law school
- Admission (or ability to be admitted) to New York Bar required
Required Skills
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence at leadership levels
- Demonstrable proficiency in data analysis and assessment abilities

SALARY RANGE:
$190-220K
Actual base pay for a successful candidate will be determined based on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to: experience/training, market demands, and geographic location.
