OEG Sports & Entertainment delivers leading sports, entertainment and other special event programming to fans and patrons in Canada and the United States. OEG owns the five-time Stanley Cup Champion Edmonton Oilers, the WHL’s three-time Memorial Cup Champion Edmonton Oil Kings, the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors and operates Rogers Place, the new home of the Oilers and Oil Kings, located in ICE District, Canada’s largest mixed-used sports and entertainment development. In 2019, Katz Group entered the retail cannabis market through a partnership with Canopy Growth, acquiring the exclusive rights to Tokyo Smoke in Ontario, before converting the agreement to a master franchise relationship.

 

Role Summary:

Reporting to the VP, Payroll & Benefits, this role leads the full-cycle payroll and benefits function for OEG’s Sports & Entertainment operations across the U.S. and Canada, ensuring accurate processing, compliance, reporting, and financial reconciliation.

 

Core Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Responsible for and oversee full payroll cycle including processing, posting to the GL, reconciliations, variance analysis, as well as some benefit administration.
  • Responsible for ensuring payroll functions are delivered consistently and effectively to salaried and hourly staff, across multiple jurisdictions in US and some in Canada.
  • Building, creating, and developing adequate processes, procedures and financial controls within the payroll department and ensure they are functioning, maintained, and monitored to minimize risk and error as well as compliance.
  • Implementing processes to ensure the accuracy and maintenance of all employee data and payment records. Ensuring data protection measures are in place to safeguard employee information.
  • Providing leadership, guidance, training, and mentor team members. Foster a positive, engaging and growth-orientated work environment that encourages teamwork, innovation, collaboration, and employee development.
  • Performs calendar year-end related activities, including updating fringe/taxable benefits, producing W2s and ACA reporting, as well as T4’s.
  • Responsible for accurate tax payment for all payroll activities which requires a thorough understanding of all compliance regulations for all US federal, State and Local tax agencies.
  • Register for new state and local tax IDs when required and maintain state unemployment rates and ensure rates are updated timely in HRIS system.
  • Complete labor statistical reports such as census and multiple work site reports
  • Prepares all periodic, quarterly and annual payroll tax reconciliation and remittance in an outsourced tax provider environment for US Taxes.
  • Ensure tax accounts are balanced and are reconciled, investigate and respond to tax authority notices and correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Manage year end audit, including month end and year end closing accruals and account reconciliation.
  • Manage US Workers Comp reporting
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum 3 years supervisory experience
  • 5+ years of experience in processing full cycle payroll
  • US payroll experience required
  • Extensive working knowledge of payroll, HRIS systems is preferred, experience with UKG and Great Plains would be an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, mentor, team building and support staff
  • Capable of handling confidential, sensitive and personal information
  • Strong planning and organization skills to determine priorities with strict deadlines
  • Well organized with superior attention to detail
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office; including advanced Excel
