Job Summary
The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in overseeing the day-to-day, monthly, and annual operations of the Accounting Department. This role is responsible for financial reporting, general accounting, treasury functions, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and budgetary controls for assigned entities and departments. The Assistant Controller also plays a key role in managing staff, maintaining internal controls, and improving financial processes and reporting efficiency. This position is partially eligible for remote work, with supervisor approval.
Essential Functions
The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in overseeing the day-to-day, monthly, and annual operations of the Accounting Department. This role is responsible for financial reporting, general accounting, treasury functions, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and budgetary controls for assigned entities and departments. The Assistant Controller also plays a key role in managing staff, maintaining internal controls, and improving financial processes and reporting efficiency. This position is partially eligible for remote work, with supervisor approval.
Essential Functions
- Prepare, review, and maintain monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, forecasts, and reporting packages for assigned entities
- Oversee and coordinate the monthly and annual close processes, including analysis and explanation of material variances and fluctuations to the Controller
- Manage and develop accounting staff by providing training, mentorship, performance feedback, and ongoing engagement
- Assist in the preparation and rolling forward of the annual budget templates and provide variance analysis and financial insight
- Coordinate with external auditors by preparing schedules, documentation, and responses to audit inquiries
- Prepare and submit required league or regulatory reporting in accordance with established deadlines
- Review and approve balance sheet reconciliations on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis
- Review and approve electronic banking transactions in a timely and controlled manner
- Establish, monitor, and enforce deadlines for assigned projects, reporting, and accounting tasks
- Identify, develop, and implement process improvements and efficiencies to enhance the accuracy and timeliness of the month-end close
- Maintain and enforce appropriate internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial information
Additional Responsibilities
- Serve as backup for other accounting and finance functions, as needed
- Lead or support department-specific projects as assigned by the Controller
- Partner with operational and administrative departments to monitor business activities impacting company financial performance
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA preferred)
- Five or more years of progressive accounting or financial experience
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, work under tight deadlines, and handle complex projects simultaneously
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate across departments and with external partners
- Experience working with NetSuite ERP, including financial reporting, general ledger, and month-end close processes
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, with a strong emphasis on Excel
- Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills
Physical Demands and Working Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, handle large objects, tools, carts, and drive machinery. Reach, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, talk, and hear for up to 8-14 hours a day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may be required to work both indoors and outdoors as required by the function, and may be also exposed to adverse conditions including inclement weather, noise, fumes etc.
