Summary of Position
The primary responsibility of the Lead Off-Ice Official is to oversee a team of Off Ice Officials and assign a variety of tasks for pre-season, regular season and playoff games played in the American Hockey League (AHL). The position will supervise each member as a liaison between the officials and the teams both before and after each game. This position will have oversight of off-ice officials who are responsible for ensuring official team rosters, game statistics are recorded in a timely manner, the game clock is operated, and all rules are and record keeping are within the bylaws of the game.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise a 16-person crew of off-ice officials, including scheduling
  • Work with on-ice officials to ensure accuracy
  • Ensure accuracy of game rosters and starting line-ups prior to each game
  • Ensure accuracy of all final scoresheets
  • Oversee timing of all penalties assessed by the Referees, ensuring penalties are recorded accurately, players are released at the appropriate times from the penalty box, and assisting the Referees with determining the on-ice strength when multiple penalties are assessed
  • Ensure accuracy of the tracking and recording of in game statistics, including goals, assists, shots, plus/minus, penalties, power plays, penalty kills, etc. in conjunction with AHL rules
  • Ensure accuracy of tracking for both team’s unofficial time on ice reports
  • Ensure crew members are dressed accordingly and act in accordance with AHL policy at all times
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications 
  • Complete understanding of the sport of hockey, with significant knowledge of hockey, preferably as an On-Ice or Off-Ice Official, as a player or as a coach, either at the Professional, Major Junior, College or Minor Professional level
  • College degree preferred or equivalent experience
  • Specific understanding of the American Hockey League, including rules, regulations, bylaws and scoring
  • Significant understanding of scoring systems used in professional sports leagues and an excellent understanding of the playing rules, bylaws and scoring pertinent to the AHL
  • Must have a current understanding of the AHL scoring and statistics
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbally
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word & Excel
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while handling multiple projects at once in a professional manner
  • Ability to read, interpret and understand the playing rules, bulletins, policies and procedures as distributed by the AHL
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to demonstrate a calm demeanor, discretion and professionalism at all times, and especially in potentially emotional situations is critical in this role
  • Ability to operate video review equipment, communication equipment and other technology introduced by the league to effectively officiate the game
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and holidays, in addition to all Gulls home games
