Summary:
The Director of WTA Mental Health & Performance (MH&P) serves as the clinical and operational leader for all mental health and performance services across the WTA. This role is responsible for the strategic design, implementation, and oversight of comprehensive mental health and performance services for WTA athletes, including clinical assessment and referral, crisis and critical incident management, treatment and intervention, mental performance skills optimization, and Tour-life skills development. The Director manages and supports the MH&P team and related services, ensuring alignment with organizational and departmental goals, clinical best practices, and the requirements of players and tournaments.

The Director provides direct clinical supervision and management of the Mental Health Care Provider (MHCP) team, promoting the consistent delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care. This includes oversight of clinical decision-making, case management, and risk assessment, as well as responsibility for maintaining provider competency and upholding all WTA clinical policies, procedures, protocols, and documentation standards. The Director also drives the integration of MHCP services within the WTA Performance Health Integrated Athlete Care Model, so players receive fully connected and coordinated support across disciplines, while aligning all services with broader organizational goals. The Director fosters a culture that is safe, equitable, inclusive, and aligned with the WTA’s commitment to women’s health and high performance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Clinical Leadership & Oversight
•           Provide clinical care and supervision, case consultation, and professional guidance to MHCPs to support high-quality practice and ongoing development.
•           Oversee team members’ mental health assessments, treatment planning & execution, and referrals.
•           Serve as the clinical case manager for all mental health–related cases and referrals, providing expert clinical oversight and guidance. Contribute specialized mental-health expertise to the integrated Performance Health athlete-care case review process, supporting interdisciplinary decision-making. 
•           Maintain evidence-based clinical standards, ethical practice, regulatory compliance, and alignment with WTA Performance Health protocols.
Mental Health Service Delivery
•           Oversee and coordinate the delivery of mental health and performance services for WTA athletes, including clinical care, mental performance skills training, Tour-life skills development, and remote telehealth services.
•           Direct the mental health and performance components of WTA Physicals and other key screenings.
•           Develop and implement MHCP tournament coverage schedules in collaboration with internal leadership/direct report.
Critical Incident, Crisis & Risk Management
•           Serve as the primary clinical lead for crisis intervention, critical incidents, and high-risk psychological situations.
•           Implement and maintain the WTA’s established crisis and critical-incident management protocols, providing updates and refinements as needed to support effective response and athlete safety.
•           Collaborate closely with direct report, WTA Legal, safeguarding, operations, and Performance Health & medical teams when managing sensitive or crisis-level cases.

 Policy, Protocol & Program Development
•           Develop, implement, and maintain mental health and performance policies, procedures, protocols, and operational workflows.
•           Establish clinical standards for assessment tools, treatment pathways, documentation requirements, and interdisciplinary communication.
•           Design and facilitate educational programs for athletes, coaches, staff, and MHCPs on WTA MH&P services, mental-wellbeing practices, and crisis-management protocols.
•           Design proactive programming aimed at addressing athlete needs (mental performance skills, Tour-life skills, mental health). Align programs with overall Performance Health priorities and strategy. 

Interdisciplinary Collaboration & External Engagement
•           Collaborate with the MH&P Medical Advisor on complex case consultation and clinical governance.
•           Work collaboratively across all Performance Health disciplines to support integrated, coordinated athlete care.
•           Serve as the primary clinical liaison for external mental health experts, consultants, and sport psychology partners.
•           Represent the Performance Health department and the MH&P program, as delegated by direct report, through presentations, committees, interviews, and other professional engagements, in alignment with WTA approval policies.

Documentation, Data & Quality Assurance
•           Lead the development, integrity, and clinical compliance of mental health & performance documentation within the electronic medical records system.
•           Oversee MHCPs completion of timely, accurate, and clinically appropriate EMR documentation that meets WTA requirements and documentation standards.
•           In collaboration with direct report, design measurable outcomes and evaluation       metrics for MH&P services, and oversee the monitoring of service utilization, clinical and performance trends, and key results to support continuous improvement, program refinement, and enhanced player health and performance.

Education, Research & Professional Development
•           Contribute to mental health education materials, digital resources, and mental wellbeing communication strategies.
•           Remain current on emerging research, best practices, and innovations in elite athlete mental health and performance.
•           Maintain all WTA MH&P annual requirements, including licensure, CEU completion, professional association involvement, and PH curriculum education.

Education & Experience
•           Master’s or Doctorate degree (or international equivalent) in Clinical/Counseling Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, Counseling, or Social Work.
Licensure & Certification
.•           Active licensure/certification as a mental health professional.
•           Specialized training and/or experience in elite sport, performance psychology, or mental performance (CMPC or equivalent preferred).
•           CPR certification.
•           ITIA Anti-Doping training.
•           This position requires an actively licensed mental health professional with advanced experience in elite athlete mental health, interdisciplinary integrated care, trauma-informed practice, and performance psychology. 
•           7+ years providing mental health services, including at least 3 years with elite and diverse athlete populations.
•           Minimum 2 years direct supervision of mental health providers.
•           Experience with EMRs, strongly preferred.

Required Skills & Competencies
•           Expertise in clinical/counseling psychology, psychotherapy, mental health counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy.
•           Clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and risk evaluation skills.
•           Clinical supervision and case management oversight
•           Crisis management and critical incident response expertise.
•           Applied sport psychology and mental performance experience.
•           Understanding of exercise science, kinesiology, and performance health integration.
•           Program design, service development, and implementation.
•           Multicultural counseling competence and experience working with diverse global populations.
•           Leadership, supervision, and administrative management skills.
•           Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
•           Proficiency in office productivity software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
•           Fluency in English; additional languages highly desirable.

 Travel Requirements
International and domestic travel required. 

Supervisory Responsibilities
Provides leadership, supervision, and performance oversight for all Mental Health Care Providers (MHCPs) and associated clinical and administrative functions.

Position Type & Work Schedule
Full-time, 40+ hours per week. Standard Monday–Friday schedule with required flexibility for weekends, extended hours, and international time zones.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Sitting for extended periods; computer and phone work; communication with global stakeholders; bending at waist/knees; ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
