Established in 1904, the United States Tennis Association Pacific Northwest (USTA PNW) is a 501c3 non-profit organization working to promote and develop the growth of tennis by providing access for all. As one of the 17 sections of the USTA, the national governing body of the sport of tennis, USTA PNW serves more than 1.3M tennis players, 200+ tennis facilities, and provides low-cost RecTennis afterschool and summer parks programs to 40,000+ participants. USTA PNW has cultivated over 300 community partnerships including schools, public parks, recreation, and shared spaces across four states. USTA PNW is the largest employer of recreational tennis jobs in the Pacific Northwest with more than 500+ full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees annually, creating new tennis jobs within the immediate communities served as a core initiative of embracing diversity and inclusivity.

To expand accessible play opportunities and to continue to ensure cost is not a barrier to entry, USTA PNW also manages and operates indoor tennis facilities. Vancouver Tennis Center (9 indoor and 4 outdoor courts), Galbraith Tennis Center (6 indoor courts), and Mint Valley Tennis Center (4 indoor courts) provide an industry-best experience and give back to the surrounding community all at an affordable cost. 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support Associate Director of Tennis - Facilities in preparation of annual operating budgets and achieve these financial goals throughout the year through proper planning, driving revenue streams and efficient use of resources.  
  • Provide beginner through advanced instruction relating to the techniques and strategies of tennis  to members, non-members and guests to enhance broad-based Adult and Junior tennis member participation. 
  • Direct supervision of Assistant Tennis Pros and Seasonal Instructors.
  • Develop, Implement, Oversee and promote all programs/classes/activities and events in an effort  to attract and retain members, non-members and guests tennis interests. 
  • Oversee and promote all private tennis lessons. 
  • Maximize court utilization.
  • Maintain an accurate record of all lessons (Associate Pro’s, Assistant Pro’s, etc.) and clinics given; provide reports on a monthly basis. 
  • Develop a culture of excellence in teaching, service and teamwork. 
  • Ensure that all facility members and guests receive courteous, prompt and professional attention to all their tennis needs. 
  • Ensure that all member questions and concerns are addressed in a timely fashion.
  • Conduct and attend all regular staff and management meetings as required. 
  • Hire, train and schedule tennis Pro staff. 
  • Organize and administer tournaments, events, exhibitions and social events (Draws, Staffing, Communication, Court Reservation, Officials, Trophies/Awards, etc.)
  • Partner with the Associate Director of Tennis - Facilities in developing a detailed  annual calendar of tennis activities and applicable promotion campaigns and promote all tournaments and events. 
  • Assess tennis and court equipment. Make necessary replacement or repair as needed.
  • Ascertain that all areas of the tennis facility are neat and clean at all times. 
  • Enforce facility rules and regulations governing the use of the facility, its equipment and other property. 
  • Knowledge of pro shop products. 
  • Respond to Facility Leadership for Facility Operations and Services  in a timely fashion.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Skills and Qualifications: 
  • Extensive program development and facility experience.  
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Experience with training tennis employees.  
  • Proven ability to grow the game of tennis.  
  • Proven ability to successfully lead a team. 
  • RSPA or PTR certified professional;  NTRP 4.5 or higher preferred.
  • CPR & AED Certified preferred.
  • USTA Certification preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Direct supervision, support, and scheduled written evaluation of direct reports including: Assistant Tennis Pros, and Seasonal Instructors.  

Internal Relationships:
Works directly to develop, support and evaluate tennis pros at facilities and align local performance with  global goals set by the Facility Leadership for Facility Operations and Services and serve as a key member of the tennis center’s leadership team. Interfaces with Front Desk Staff and Registration Coordinator as needed. Leads weekly Tennis Pro Meetings as well as meets as needed with USTA PNW Shared Services including Chief Operating Officer, General Manager of Curriculum & Training, Human Resources (as relates to on-court tennis pros), and Marketing (connect tennis pro and on-court activation with the  Marketing Department’s global and ongoing initiatives).  

External Relationships:
Maintains high quality customer service with Members and Guests at USTA PNW Tennis Centers.  Represents the mission and organization at special events, conferences and training as needed. 

Travel Demands:
Infrequent. Travel to USTA PNW Annual Meetings. Other travel as needed to special events, training events, conferences and professional development events. 

On-Court vs Off-Court (Admin) expectations:
  • 70% On-Court 
  • 30% Off-Court (Weekly QA Evaluations/One-on-Ones, Team Meetings, Scheduling, Budget  and Metric Tracking) 
  • Assist in running tournaments as requested may temporarily increase # of Admin hours per week. 
  • Subject to change with business needs.

Conditions of Hire:
  • This position serves the Pacific Northwest Section out of Galbraith Tennis Center (GTC) in Tacoma, Washington. Must be able to work from GTC as a primary work location.
  • Must have the ability to continually pass a background check. 
  • Must complete the USTA Safe Sport online education course. Eligibility to be SafePlay approved and remain SafePlay approved through tenure at USTA PNW.
  • Must register within ADP Workforce Now (payroll platform) to ensure proper tax and payroll recording. 
  • Authorization to work within the United States administered by a 3rd party vendor.
  • Must sign the USTA PNW Offer Letter, Employee Handbook, and all required policies and procedures upon hire and as needed.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
  • This position will most likely be a mix of on-site at a facility, and on-court environments. 
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with reasonable accommodations given. This position requires the ability to:
    • Operate general office equipment, such as a computer (and its accessories), scanner, copy machine, printer, phone, etc. 
    • Occasionally move office products and supplies, up to 30 pounds. 
    • Talk, speak or hear. 
    • Use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. 
    • Carry out repetitive motions regularly such as typing and motions holding a tennis racquet. 
    • Respond to sounds and visual cues.

Compensation and Benefits:
  • Compensation is based on the candidate's skills, qualifications, and relevant work experience.
  • Salary, Bonus, and Paid-Time-Off details included in Offer Letter or other communications from the Human Resources team.

  • *Exempt status for employees are for on-court staff who perform and earn weekly commission wages which outperform all other employee wages from USTA PNW. If this criteria is not met, staff will need prior written approval from their direct manager to work over 40 hours in any given work week to adhere to Washington State Law. This is the responsibility of the employee to manage and communicate with the direct supervisor before overtime hours are worked.
