Established in 1904, the United States Tennis Association Pacific Northwest (USTA PNW) is a 501c3 non-profit organization working to promote and develop the growth of tennis by providing access for all. As one of the 17 sections of the USTA, the national governing body of the sport of tennis, USTA PNW serves more than 1.3M tennis players, 200+ tennis facilities, and provides low-cost RecTennis afterschool and summer parks programs to 40,000+ participants. USTA PNW has cultivated over 300 community partnerships including schools, public parks, recreation, and shared spaces across four states. USTA PNW is the largest employer of recreational tennis jobs in the Pacific Northwest with more than 500+ full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees annually, creating new tennis jobs within the immediate communities served as a core initiative of embracing diversity and inclusivity.

To expand accessible play opportunities and to continue to ensure cost is not a barrier to entry, USTA PNW also manages and operates indoor tennis facilities. Vancouver Tennis Center (9 indoor and 4 outdoor courts), Galbraith Tennis Center (6 indoor courts), and Mint Valley Tennis Center (4 indoor courts) provide an industry-best experience and give back to the surrounding community all at an affordable cost. 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide beginner through advanced tennis instruction relating to the techniques and strategies of tennis to members, non-members and guests to enhance broad-based member participation.
  • Assist and perform tournament administration.  Directly responsible for running a minimum of 6-8 tournaments per year with additional support provided to tournament administration at GTC. 
  • Ensure that all club members, non-members and guests receive courteous, safe, prompt and professional attention to all their tennis development needs.
  • Work consistent weekends and evening shifts as needed to meet schedule and facility needs (dictated by manager).
  • Attend all staff, management meetings and training as required.
  • Maintain an accurate record of all lessons and clinics given.
  • Promote all programs, tournaments and events and consistently work towards on-going growth initiatives.
  • Work to retain and grow facility memberships.
  • Ascertain that all areas of the tennis facility are neat and clean at all times.
  • Enforce facility rules and regulations governing the use of the facility, its equipment and other property.
  • Implementation of Club Automation processes and procedures.
  • Communication and service (knowledge of) available products at the pro shop.
  • Respond to Associate Director of Tennis - Facilities/ Head Tennis pro in a timely fashion.

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Preferred RSPA or PTR certificate.   
  • Proven and progressive experience in leading and teaching tennis.
  • Proven experience working with juniors and adults of all abilities in a tennis club setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively build relationships with staff and customers.
  • Work independently and collaboratively to accomplish responsibilities, goals and projects. 
  • Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers, partners, vendors.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • CPR and AED certified preferred. 
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office.

On-Court vs. Off Court needs:
  • 90% On-Court (40% Lessons + 60% Programs)
  • 10% Off-Court (Such as, but not limited to; Tournaments, admin work, meetings, professional development). Assist in running tournaments as requested. May temporarily increase # of Admin hours per week and reduce on-court hours based on tournament needs.  Tournaments may occur weekly or monthly depending on schedule.  Assistant Tennis Pro will be expected to administer and manage tournament events regularly. 
  • Subject to change with business needs. 

Supervisory Responsibilities: None. This position does not oversee staff or direct staff.  

Internal Relationships: Works primarily and directly with Associate Director of Tennis - Facilities / Head Tennis Pro (program delivery, curricula, templates, quality assessment and support) and meets weekly for team meetings as scheduled with Tennis Pros, General Manager, and leadership team. Interfaces with Front Desk Staff and Registration Coordinators as needed.  

External Relationships: Maintains high quality customer service with Members, Non-Members, and Guests at USTA PNW Tennis Centers, particularly during on-court delivery and directly scheduling lessons. Represents the mission and organization at special events, conferences and training as needed.

Travel demands: Infrequent.

Key Performance Indicators: When reviewing this position during the year, the following will serve as performance indicators: 
  • Annual Reviews performed by Supervisor.  
  • Evidence of effective use of program curricula, templates and QA tools. 
  • Achievement of specific objectives for areas of responsibility. 
  • Evidence of high quality customer service.  
  • Evidence of performance of major duties.

  • Evidence of delivering the USTA PNW mission. 

 Conditions of Hire:
  • This position serves the Pacific Northwest Section out of Galbraith Tennis Center (GTC) in Tacoma, Washington. Must be able to work from GTC as a primary work location.
  • Must have the ability to continually pass a background check. 
  • Must complete the USTA Safe Sport online education course. Eligibility to be SafePlay approved and remain SafePlay approved through tenure at USTA PNW.
  • Must register within ADP Workforce Now (payroll platform) to ensure proper tax and payroll recording. 
  • Prove authorization to work within the United States administered by a 3rd party vendor.
  • Must sign the USTA PNW Offer Letter, Employee Handbook, and all required policies and procedures upon hire and as needed. 
  • Ability to fulfill the essential job functions as described with reasonable accommodations given. 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
  • This position will work on-site at a facility, and on-court environments. 
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with reasonable accommodations given. This position requires the ability to:
    • Operate general office equipment, such as a computer (and its accessories), scanner, copy machine, printer, phone, etc. 
    • Occasionally move office products and supplies, up to 30 pounds. 
    • Use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. 
    • Carry out repetitive motions regularly such as typing and motions holding a tennis racquet. 
    • The ability to lift and move awkward items from one location to another.
    • The ability to respond quickly to sounds or visual cues (such as alarms and/or safety concerns both on and off court).
    • The ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
    • The ability to respond to dangerous situations and respond to sounds and visual cues.
    • The ability to work in extreme weather and indoor/outdoor conditions.
    • The ability to work for length of shift (with breaks and lunches given per policy).

Compensation and Benefits:
  • Hourly rates for Program Delivery and Admin, and paid time off outlined in the signed Offer Letter. Program rates start at $25.00 per hour and higher based on experience.
  • Lessons commission rates outlined in the signed Offer Letter. Commissions from private lessons can range from 55% - 59% based on experience. 
  • 18 days of Paid Time Off accrued annually and 12 Annual Paid holidays each calendar year.
  • Opportunity to opt for Employer-Paid Employee Health or Buy-Up plan, Dental and Vision insurance per current standards and plan rules.  Employee contribution to payment for benefit plans is determined annually.

  • *Exempt status for employees are for on-court staff who perform and earn weekly commission wages which outperform all other employee wages from USTA PNW. If this criteria is not met, staff will need prior written approval from their direct manager to work over 40 hours in any given work week to adhere to Washington State Law. This is the responsibility of the employee to manage and communicate with the direct supervisor before overtime hours are worked.
